How come the people of Liberty City/Vice City/San Andreas/Whatever City never lock their car doors? And why do they always leave their keys in the ignition whenever they park their cars?

So the game can happen.

But you break windows and hotwire a lot of parked cars....

Most people in the GTA universe aren't very intelligent. I always assumed the characters are hot wiring the cars anyway.

The cops sometimes lock their doors.

If they included a hotwiring mechanic minigame everytime you stole a car, everyone would absolutely hate it.

Considering that those games operate on a 24-hour day condensed into 24 minutes, it's possible for an experienced person to hot wire a car in a minute. 1 second passing by would be the equivalent of that.

Aren't there a lot of locked cars in 5? Also, you have what, three people regularly committing gran theft auto in a city that has (assuming the population is the same as where it's based of of in real life) over 3 million people? The odds of getting your car stolen are not high

Why do the police / the hospital release you back on to the streets after you have murdered thousands of people?

Well, it doesn't have to have a minigame. What if there was just a mechanic where you had to collect hotwires throughout the game, and your ability to steal cars was limited by how many hotwires you have?

They kinda did in 4 and 5. You just tap triangle tho

Smashing into a car with people around usually gets you 1 star.

Don't most cars these days start up just by pressing a button. No keys needed now.

But what about when there aren't people around? I'll admit it's been a while since I (Butters) played a GTA game, are car alarms even a thing in the GTA universe? You'd think that at least occasionally the owner of the vehicle would be alerted to his car being stolen when an alarm goes off. Also, if your character is smashing windows so much wouldn't the shards of glass occasionally cause him to bleed?

in gta v yes you get a one star wanted level and peds call the cops on you

Yes car alarms go off but usually nobody investigates or cares. Just like real life. Also at least in GTA4 onward, car window smashing has varying animations. They don't always use their fist. IRL if you were breaking into cars that way you'd use some kind of tungsten tip pick. Can be small enough to fit on a ring.
