...for killing of elderly woman back in 2019:

Kawhi Leonards sister is facing life behind bars for murdering an elderly woman in 2019.

ESPN reports Kimesha Williams, the sister of the Los Angeles Clippers star forward, has been sentenced to life without parole in connection with the murder of Afaf Assad, an 84-year-old Long Beach, California woman who Williams killed in a casino bathroom in 2019.

Williams, along with another woman Candace Townsell, is accused of following Assad into a bathroom at Pechanga Resort Casino on Aug. 31, 2019, where they broke her skull in a robbery attempt. Assad died a few dies after the attack, and the two women were ultimately found guilty of first-degree murder, robbery and elder abuse.

...Bruh why are we leading with his name in this situation? Shouldn't we lead with her name since she committed the crime, then make a note somewhere in the article about who her brother is?

This kind of headline always irks me. "Famous person's relative does horrible thing" is such bad-faith journalism.

you're right.

most of the articles I saw were referring to her as his sister first, rather than starting with her name, and I wasn't thinking.

does it matter?

if he lead with her name, no one here would have a clue as to who she is as more people are familiar with who shes related to therefore would generate some kind of interest in further reading the article

From what I recall, she was long ago estranged from the family. Ran with a really bad crowd. Doesn't excuse anything, but there was apparently a lot of distance between her and Kawhi.

Yeah, that's the point I'm making. It's a sensational headline that lures people in to read the article. It's motivated by financial incentives. It's attaching an innocent man's name to a headline about murder.

It's fucked up, is what it is.

Call me soft if you want, but if that's the case, I'd rather be soft than complacent.

I saw a news station cover it on WS, and they added his name at the end. As an afterthought. It was all about her until the end when they're like, "Oh, and she's also the sister of Kawhi Leonard."

And yes there is a element of racism when they do stuff such as this, "see this black superstar, he's not what you think he is HIS SISTER KILLED AN ELDERLY WOMAN!!!"

But they do it with famous white people as well. It's a famous thing, not a race thing. However, racism is still a huge issue in journalism, so I get your point.
