Because pensions and retirement funds have been decimated. Because Social Security and Disability payments aren't enough to live on. If the tenant never lived there at all, he'd be in the exact same situation. Lots of people can't afford homes though. They don't try to buy one anyway in the hopes that someone else will pay it off for them. I will probably never own a home myself because I live within my means. The idea of accruing massive debt trying to maintain a life I know I can't afford, trusting my home and entire financial well-being to another person is insane.
