Both summoner/healers, both bad attackers.

Eiko gets a lot of back row physical weapons, plus has Phoenix, which has a chance to auto revive you on game over (and i think the first game over is a freebie, too).

Dagger is broken for a portion of the game, doesnt have many good offensive weapons, and summons arent even that useful in the game anyway, besides Phoenix, which isnt a normal summon.

Eiko. Holy can do 9999 dmg. Pair it with half-magic oh boy. My end-game party always has her, Amarant, and Steiner for max high dps. Ozma say what

Unfortunately for me, my fav characters seem to be less popular. I love Freya, for her design, and Quina is fun to use, but I dont know how to take her into Ozma.

There are people that use someone other than Zidane steiner vivi garnet? Those be the only characters I care about story wise and thus gameplay wise

Dagger/Garnet. I usually don't care for what character is more powerful, I lean more towards story relevance.

I mostly just use Zidane, Steiner and Vivi and usually Quina.
I just the white mages for healing out of battle and used potions in battle
I think I started using Eiko, tho, more.
Garnet always seemed sucky with the whole 'she knows summons but no, you can't use them unless you overlevel or wait a long ass time'

I tend to base my team
on the story rather than gameplay so I used the standard:

Zidane
Dagger
Vivi
Steiner

Neither.

My main part was Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, and Quina. A purely offensive team thanks to auto haste, Regan, reflect and white wind was all I needed.

Stainer and Zidane had high trance damage, vivi using the double cast into reflect exploit, and Quina with gousto folk maxed dealt max damage.

Holy? Garnet didn't even have Esuna.

Double White >>>>>>>>>>>>> anything Garnet ever dreamed of doing. She doesn't even learn Full Life ffs, literally the only healing spell you need

I did it on my first playthrough not knowing anything about the game just because I hated the name dagger.

I hate Garnet, plus Eiko has Holy + Phoenix, so she wins easily.

I use Dagger because she's a good character and Eiko is not and whichever gameplay difference they have is irrelevant compared to that.

No just 9999. Dragon's Crest does guaranteed 9999 damage if fully powered up for 16 mp. Can't be reduced either.

neither, zidane/steiner/freya/amarant

guaranteed 9999 on every turn and because auto-abilities are busted, you never need to worry about buffing, healing or removing status effects

I think there's only one boss in the entire game who has more than 99,999 HP

I change my answer to that, its a nice normal name that's not a D-list mineral (and that's being generous)

I do something similar in Chrono Trigger. I don't like Marle so she has the name Nadia from the moment she joins me.

IIRC, both are pretty easy to get a 9999 damage move on, just takes some grinding.

For Freya, just kill dragons over and over again since it powers up her Dragon Crest move with each kill (don't remember if she has to get the kill or not though).

For Quina, I think s/he has a move called Frog Drop that gets stronger the more frogs you catch.

Edit: Oh, for the topic at hand, I never use Eiko unless I'm forced to use her, even if she is considered better than Garnet. If I want a white mage, I go Garnet every time.

Eiko is the better mage when you first get the choice to form a party as Dagger gets nerfed for story reasons for a good chunk of disc 3.

Her kit also requires less investment since you have to grind stones to get Dagger's summons more powerful. Phoenix, Holy and her better cure spells are great especially in a more casual play through.

If you are willing to grind though Dagger becomes the better character. Since the damage cap is 9999 and their are no multi hit moves Odin is the only way to one hit kill enemies with 10000+ hp which is basically everything in the final dungeon. It also targets everything so it can turn a 4 turn battle into a one turner. And if you have auto regen and auto haste on your party then any summon is basically a full heal so her less potent healing is moot anyway. She is by far the best character to use to level grind against yans as they not only have hp higher than the damage cap but they counter on hit as well making Odin the safest way of getting rid of them.

dagger is a better summoner and eiko is a better white mage
when everyone has auto regen the long ass summon animations will leave everyone fully healed so there isnt a need for a dedicated white mage at end game

plus a hidden game mechanic boosts the strength of daggers summons the more gems she has that teach that summon
so if she has 99 shiva gems shiva gets a massive damage boost and will have dagger hit the 9999 damage cap at a lower level than eiko's holy will be able to
