MP = Multiplayer BTW. Well?

Yesterday I was playing competitive Overwatch and a random on my team was flaming another random for having a bad game. I mean, we are all human. It happens. He eventually left voice chat. I asked him if he thinks flaming our teammate helps our chances of winning. He said flat out that it does. People play better when you flame them. This baffled me. I dont think Ive ever seen anyone play better after getting flamed. Of course, he actually started to play worse which isnt a surprise.

Whats crazy is that this isnt the first time Ive heard this. There seems to be a group of people that truly believe that flaming your teammates make them play better. The reasoning they have usually is, Well if I get flamed, I would want to prove that person wrong. So Ill play better. Most people go into a competitive game trying their best. So I have no idea how this helps. It should make things worse more often than not.

If I have a toxic teammate I usually just throw the game. Zero reason to get that person a win.

Everyone is different. Most anyone is gonna be upset/mad but then you'll have those it drives to be better and those it drives to give up and maybe even those who keep trying but it causes them to fucknup more cause it makes them nervous/anxious

Yea but Im looking at the majority of the time. I truly dont think the majority use it as fuel to play better theh they already were. Especially when they jump into a rank game trying to win

I can see that dude's perspective if it's a friend or someone I actually know that's "flaming" me, because that's just usually criticism from someone that wants you to play better. The same isn't true from some random stranger in a pub lobby. When that's happening the flaming is usually done as catharsis for the shit talker, and I have no interest in that. When that happens I'll just play worse on purpose because then the objective of my fun has changed from wanting to win to pissing that person off even more.

No and furthermore I think that anyone who would flame someone else over a videogame is extremely childish

People can do it. As long as they can open their eyes and look around, they'll see it. They'll see the truth!

Friendless douchebags think theyre NBA players trying to motivate their teammates after they turn the ball over. Really theyre just being assholes and making the fun video game miserable for everyone else.

I only ever experienced this in Overwatch, usually because someone doesnt like the character Im playing as, and their impotent nerd rage comes out over not having control over their teammates. I just mute them and let them yell at the clouds. Sometimes all 5 of my teammates would be flaming me simultaneously, and then I would just exit chat entirely.

Depends on the person. Some people will react positively and some negatively. It depends on your level of emotional intelligence to work out what motivational techniques work on whom.

I am guilty of this tbh, nothing is more annoying than someone spamming "I need heals" non stop. Idc too much about winning, if I play well then I consider it a victory. So I'll gladly lose a game over healing toxic players.

I wasnt going to revisit this but Overwatch actually had a blog post today. It was more about cheating than about their AI listening to people flaming each other and automatically reporting them. Since they are recording your voices in game and have audio logs, that have data on match outcomes. Look at this section:

Its almost like this was obvious when you see it first hand. Most people respond poorly to being flamed.

it works, but so does nicely giving suggestions on how to play better in a not so condescending way. All because acting like Mr. Fletcher works doesn't mean it's a justifiable way to get someone to perform better.

Much more likely that toxic players only yell at their teammates when theyre losing.
