If you have the time, I would also love to hear why you feel the game or games are special to you!

Thanks!

Maybe Worms Armageddon, I've owned it on most platforms it released on, I'm good at it and used to be high ranked. After probably thousands of hours, I can still play it and not be bored.

Final Fantasy IX

When I was a kid I used to play the game a lot at this after school day care I went to. They had a PS1 and I took turns playing with the other kids. Over the course of several weeks we beat the game and I begged my mom to buy me a PS1 so I could play the entire game on my own. She did and I beat the game and have beaten the game 30+ times. The last time I played was last summer and I'm planning on another replay soon.

two years ago, it was 100% Path of Exile. Then, the devs lost their mind and the game went to shit. but honestly, even after going to shit it still is probably tops. that's how far ahead it was at its best.

I have actually never heard someone name a Worms game their GOAT. I loved Armageddon back in the day, but I never got so much into the Worms games that I got good. Always a little win some, lose some.

I love FF 7, 8, 10 & 12, but never gave FF9 a fair chance, even though I'm not sure why. I have it downloaded on my NS, so I will try to give it a fair chance.... How far do you need to go in the story before you feel this is a game that's special.

When I recommend FF 7 to friends, I tell them that they at least should get to Kalm and listen to Clouds story. If the game haven't grabbed your attention after his story, I will never bring it up again. Is there a point in FF9 that is like that?

I'll try a rough top 20. Some of these have nostalgic value and others are like works of art.

Animal Crossing: Wild World
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
Dark Souls
Elden Ring
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
Forza Horizon 3
Grand Theft Auto V
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
Halo 3
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
RuneScape
Sid Meier's Civilization V
Spyro: Year of the Dragon
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Terraria
World of Warcraft
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses

Trying to choose just one game is difficult considering all the available genres. I'd probably have to choose an MMO for the replayability factor.

Is it playable on any modern systems? I tried it on a SNES-emulator back in the day, but came to a point where the map didn't load correctly and I couldn't advance. I want to try it again, as I have seen many who have this game as one of their favorites (if not THE favorite)

Super Robot Wars Alpha, my first entry to the series.

Was amazed by the cross overs. Having many others protagonists disciplined Shinji from Evangelion and made him act like a man was cool.

dark souls 1 -- for its invasion system.

it's legitimately unpredictable, and that's a big deal in a video game. it isn't the illusion of unpredictable like rng may offer, either; you absolutely never know what you're going to get when you invade in ds1. i think when you can accomplish something like that it becomes less of just a game and more of a playspace.

Final Fantasy 6. It hit me at a particularly formative time in my life, showing me at a young age that video games can be an artful means of expression beyond just a time-passing hobby. It set a lot of video game standards for me, a small handful of which have yet to be topped - to this day it still has my favorite ending in gaming by a country mile (Chrono Trigger comes closest).

It has to be Streets Of Rage 2. It's the one game I've been coming back to on a consistent basis for 3 decades now.
Why do I keep coming back? The music along with the variety in combat many beat em ups have tried to replicate since. I absolutely adore the somewhat recent Streets Of Rage 4 as well, but there's just something about that Genesis sound that soothes me.

This

A big chunk of it will be nostaglia and the fact I played it as a kid. It was the first piece of media I experienced where I legitimately cared about what happens to the characters (Good thing it had a happy ending eh?)

But even as an adult:

It has incredible music
A heart felt story
Amazing characters with actual depth and character arcs
Doesn't treat the player like an idiot

Despite being a colorful kids game it has a death count that rivals Warhammer 40k

It has more soul and heart than any other game I've played since.

Even games with much better gameplay or less faults just don't amount to the same "Greater than the sum of their parts" that FFIX does.

Melodies of Life legit makes me want to cry.

That's a tough one. Probably Grand Theft Auto 4.

It was my first HD game, and I was gobsmacked by how good it looks. The car driving, crash physics and ragdoll are all on point and even games made today can't compete. Top it off with a mature storyline that manages to maintain a sense of humour, and yep, it just might be my favorite game.

GTA V dropped the ball by reducing the car crash damage effects and the driving was too arcadey.

The Last of Us Part II.

I like how it's a revenge tale that mostly takes place during a war, and how it acknowledges multiple perspectives, showing how things can be more complex when there is no good/bad side. and where a lot of stories, especially in AAA games, might hold back, it keeps going.

plus, it has an amazing presentation and great gameplay.

Street Fighter IV

For years, I thought Id die with Smash Melee as my favorite game, due to the memories I had of playing it in college with a large group of friends.

But when SF4 came out, I got deeper into that game than I ever will with another game again. Id always been good at Street Fighter - easily the best of my group of friends. And when the game first launched, I had a 56 game win streak and 44 game win streak in online ranked mode.

However, that was largely in part to the huge influx of casual players (myself included) who were playing it at launch. I knew how to play Street Fighter, but I didnt know how to play Street Fighter, if that makes sense. I started to learn things that most people wouldnt know about cross ups, buffering, negative edge, plinking, option selects, kara throws, etc.

This was also the first game that made me realize there was a community out there. The first time I stumbled up Evo moment #37 (Daigos parry at Evo), I watched it over and over. Not for the gameplay, but to see the camera pan over to the crowd. I had no idea things like that existed - massive banquet halls rented out for the purpose of video game tournaments. After that, I would watch all the big tournies, Evo became a mini holiday for me, and I just kept playing.

Also, my brother was playing it at the same time as me. Ive always viewed him as someone who is really good at video games, but Ive always been a step ahead of him. We were basically equals in SF4, and when I moved out of the house, wed occasionally (not too often) have online sessions that would last for hours - like 75+ matches before wed call it a night.

tl;dr = SF4 was the rare game that made me really do a deep dive over like nearly a decade, constantly getting better and learning of the fighting game community in the process. Absolutely love that game.

Shadow: War Of Succession, without a doubt.

From the gripping opening cinematic in which S.H.A.D.O.W. HQ is besieged and the leader of the organisation is presumably left strewn amidst the ruins, Shadow: War Of Succession is a gripping, immersive thrill ride like no other. Released for the Panasonic 3DO and graciously improving upon the graphical style seen in lesser 2D fighters, it's no wonder avid arcade goers partook in their own wars of succession, fighting for their turn to play this classic.

SWOS features a colorful cast of characters, from the nefarious Riggs Riddick, to the anti-hero Carlos Cortez. Flanking them are beloved fighting game icons such as Anvil, Erika, Gabriella, Sasha and Viper. That's to say nothing of the Shadow King, the game's infamous final boss who older players will remember from long afternoons at the local arcade, pouring their lunch money into the coin slot in exchange for all the knuckles sandwiches they could eat.

The gameplay was to be blunt, years ahead of its time. Let's just say this is one fighting game that's not going to need a rerelease with a turbo speed option. The music wasn't far behind the gameplay, each bout was scored to a frenetic, heart-pounding piece worthy of something greater than the medium it was constrained to. Speaking of such squandered talent, SWOS takes an all hands on deck approach to its voice casting, conjuring a veritable dream team of the finest voiceover talents of its time to lead the medium to greater heights.

I won't spoil the ending, but I'll assure you it's a fittingly magnificent send-off to conclude the experience. It's for good reason that Riggs has permanent position on the banner of any video game convention worth its G-Fuel, right next to Matt Hazard, QWOP, Chuck Greene, Gulman, and Mike Dawson.
Overall, a masterpiece.

Dmc 3:se ubisoft port

The weaponswitch and style switch mod make it the definitive edition of dmc 3. Add in the inertia mod for a bit of extra challenge and fun too. Prob the best beat em up masher ill ever play. Just feels really responsive and easy.
Especially if you set the game at higher framerate however it does change the pace of the game cuz you can spam wayy more inputs per second. You have to feel it for yourself. I swap between 60 and 120 fps for this game depending on my mood.
