Well tons of animals survived. This wasn't even the worst extinction to have happened. Every animal alive today is a descendent of those that survived. Also, many dinosaurs species never even went extinct.

NASA scans for such objects now. Every once in a while, there is news of something that could maybe be a threat. But it always ends up being a false alarm.
