When I was a kid I asked my mom for an anime donut while at Krispy Kream. She was confused so she asked the cashier, which confused the cashier. My explanation of them being white triangles with a black mark on them did not help.

I was feeling for him to call it an Anime Donut, maybe it might be several shows or movies. When I was a kid watching translated Japanese cartoons, I didn't even realize they were Japanese.

Plus, I'd like to learn what other shows it might have been translated that way in, beyond Pokmon.

I wonder if tvtropes has a section on it...

Real talk of the major convenience stores here (Lawson, Family Mart, and 7-11), I think 7-11 has the worst onigiri, but obviously they're all super cheap and not very high quality. I think Family Mart is overall the best though (for onigiri).

I'm curious to know what the thought process of the translators was. I get that the word onigiri might not be recognized by most english speaking kids, but surely rice ball or something shouldn't be confusing. At least not as confusing as calling this a donut when it looks nothing like it.

Not really, not all onigiri are sushi rice. Mostly just rice sprinkled with salt.

Oh it was Pokmon. But I think I saw enough rice balls in other shows that I knew they weren't Pokmon donuts exclusively.

Localization. Children would know what rice balls are, but the average American child has no taste for rice balls. Thus they localized it to something that would be comparable culturally.

That'd make perfect sense if this was text-only, but paired with a visual of something that clearly isn't a donut makes it a really odd scene.

Even if we suppose a rice ball is too exotic to grasp, they could have translated it in a way without explicitly naming it. "Come have lunch. That always cheers me up" "-These snacks are great!"

I am explaining the localization thought process. I am not saying that it wasn't dumb and that they should have asked the correct question.

Maybe I'm looking too much into it but her face was 100% disgust after a few bites and fakely morphed into enjoying it for the video.
