Now everyone says they hate it. What happened?

It kept going, and going, and going.

It was around for 12 years, and currently has multiple spinoffs. Most shows struggle to keep people invested after a certain point.

When do you think it should have ended?

As someone who watched every episode of the show, it is not an exaggeration to say that it peaked with the pilot.

Basically as the show went on everyone got stupider and stupider. Their decisions became more and more inexplicable. Don't get me wrong, you can have a show about incompetent idiots and it will work, but that wasn't what the show was trying to portray and a lot of the characters didn't start off as idiots, poor writing just morphed them into idiots.

Also, the shows editing got out of control. At some point AMC basically decided that they could have episodes be as long as they wanted. But here is the thing, time constraints are important. Just because you can have an hour and fifteen minute long episode doesn't mean you should. There was a lot of content that should have ended up on the cutting room floor that got aired. It turned the average TWD into a poorly paced slog.

Story seems to be going nowhere, they suck at "trimming the fact" and story progress slowly, borderline feel like some events are fillers. They killed too many major characters and we barely care about the new ones that arrive.

From what I remember everyone said they didn't like it but kept watching it anyways.

After the Negan introduction episode ending on a cliffhanger I lost a lot of interest and then when I watched the episode Swear I decided it was pointless to continue.

Lots of bad things happened to the story and writing over time. Too many boring subplots. Filler episodes. Baffling story decisions (the one that made me stop watching was Carl's death, which happened randomly for no fucking reason).

Basically... as time went on, it became a soap opera instead of a zombie survival show.

Yeah I think every season should be a full story arc. If the arc is short then have it at 8 episodes. If its a long story then make it 16 or 24 episodes.

After the introduction of negan, nearly every season finale was a cliff hanger but on top of that, they had a lot of boring filler episodes.

The peak season is still season 1 imo. I was able to still enjoy the show up til when negan showed up and Rick would be his bitch for entire seasons.

While the show wasn't terrible and I watched it until Negan showed up the show really pissed me off from day one where it completely ruined one of my favorite characters from the comics. So I never loved it. I never forgave the show for what it did to Andrea.

Oh there was a reason. They didnt want to renegotiate with the actor now that he was an adult.

Strayed too far from the comics without knowing how to really flesh out those changes into something good. I loved the comics from beginning to end, and the show should have just stuck to that

It was garbage even at the end of the first season. I truly have zero clue how it lasted so long.

A lot of the first season wasn't great and didn't feel like the rest of the series (especially the finale), and the second season is still the worst ever. It got a lot better with the prison, but after that, it just spun its wheels for several years.

I thought the first few episodes of 1 were fine enough but it felt like the finale made it all pointless. Then I watched the first episode of 2 and just turned it off and never went back.

How they can establish lore and then ignore it that quickly was it for me

I watched the first 5 seasons and I enjoyed 2 and 3 the most. But my favorite ep was in the middle of S4 when the Governor came to the prison.
