Still a great game. Replayed it recently and had a blast. Never understood the OnLy ThE sOniC aNd ShAdOw LeVeLs ArE gOoD mentality. Theyre the best part of the game for sure, but Tails and Robotniks levels are fun too. Some of Knuckles and Rouges levels are good too.

Cant believe I had the patience to 100% the game back in the day lol. ~14 year old me definitely had more time (and patience) lol.

Yeah, while some of the last hits can get a LITTLE annoying, this fight really nails just being an over-the-top, super-powered beat down of a fight.

It's almost a shame it's so easy to just power through it so fast; there's some fun flavor dialogue most people never get to hear

That is a real mixed bag. Down the middle. As far as the first of each stage's 5 missions go at least.
The Sonic/Shadow levels are fun. The Knuckles/Rouge levels aren't fun, the Tails/Eggman levels are sometimes fun and sometimes not fun.

Better boss fights would have been nice. The gunship you fight 3 times is meh, King Boo and the giant statue are okay I guess. The rival battles are kinda meh, the last Sonic vs Shadow one is easily the best of that bunch. Biolizard is disproportionately great compared to everything it's surrounded with, Finalhazard is hype until you get hit once then you're just nervously watching the rings ticking down the entire time.

Music kicks ass. I think that's one of the make or break things for this game especially. If a level has boring music it's gonna be exposed as the same old linear jumping, shooting and pushing switches a lot faster. If it has good music though, all bets are off, I gotta do the unsafe but cool looking trick.

Veering off topic a little. It's a shame Shadow stuck around as much as he did. Sometimes I think about how much better the Generations rival battle would have been if it was a rare opportunity to see him again with his original hostile personality. Instead it's just his latest chance to embarrass himself.
Even further off topic. You ever notice in that game how Metal Sonic explodes and Silver gets crushed under his giant ball of junk, but Shadow just gets hit and knocked down? I don't like that. He should have at least been punted off into space. Talk about outstaying your welcome. You know who didn't outstay how welcome? Blonic. He has a couple of videos and that's it. I have a much higher image of Blonic than Shadow the Hedgehog. Basically the ending's kinda goofy but it'd be easier to look back on if we'd been spared Shadow gradually turning into Vegeta over the following decade.

Anyway, game's neat. If I could mess with anything, I'd add a mode that lets you play both stories' levels in order. After I beat Final Rush and Shadow and started the dark story, it did feel a bit like Ghosts and Goblins taking away your progress and sending you back to do it all over again. I know it'd detract from everyone working together on Cannon's Core but whatever.
Light dash and bounce mapped to separate buttons would have been cool too.

Iirc Hot Shelter and Ice Cap each had some platforming (if only like 20 seconds' worth) to get to the pool where Froggy was.

Just looked it up and you're right. For some reason I thought he was in a pool higher up or that you had to climb up the ramp to jump down and break the ice. But you can really just jump on the cracked ice and catch him. Still worse than mech stages.

Yup

Shadow says he's not doing so hot and his body can't sustain his super form, and implies that Sonic might be the ultimate life form.

Also fun how the ARK and the hedgies start to burn up in the atmosphere as the clock ticks down and they get closer to earth. Also the other characters basically give up hope and tell the two to save themselves.

The guy who voiced Eggman in these being able to improv that entire pissing on the moon rant without breaking character was legitimately impressive.
