...people they're managing? I mean, in your work experience have you been like , best friends with your supervisors? What is your opinion, on this subject though?

No.

I'd say there's many attributes to being a bad manager. Being too chummy with the staff isn't one of them.

Yeah
It breeds cronyism. There's nothing wrong with being on good terms or even being work friends, but if you're hanging out outside the office all of the time it creates a weird relationship.

I wont say usually, but It definitely can be. Especially if that chummy relationship affects the manager/supervisors ability to reel in the reins when necessary.

You also open yourself up to more likely being manipulated/taken advantage of. As well if you have obviously better relationships/are closer with certain people than you are with others you can look biased or like youre playing favorites even if youre not.

Thats not to say you have to run the place like a damn drill instructor, you just have to know how to balance being chill/chummy and being the boss. Ive known plenty of people that could do both.

There should be limits, but it's not inherently bad. Disallowing it altogether is a great way to end up with supervisors/managers who are out of touch with their team.

If they're chummy with all employees, nothing wrong with that and they're probably a good manager.

If they're chummy with only a handful of employees, then yes that's usually bad.

The last 2 managers I had before my current job I was friends with outside work

Would go out for drinks with the first one and everybody thought we were fucking on the down low >_> even though she's a married woman

The second one actually left and joined another company a few months after I left and now she's trying to bring me aboard to where she's at

This. In my personal life, my friends & I haven't run into problems like this before, but I've heard horror stories from people online.

I feel being "chummy" is necessary in order for the employees to like working for you, but not at the expense of actually being a manager.

As a Senior Manager of a firm, it shouldn't be but it can be a bad thing. I always put a certain type of barrier between me and my co-workers when talking about personal things and business. I think that's ultimately the most important thing for Managers, learning to never let things get personal with a co-worker imo.
