Edit: title is supposed to say "Sheriff's traveled 500 miles to get a 9 year old's goat"

And kill it to teach her a lesson.

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-03-30/goat-slaughter-shasta-county-fair

Echoing language used when law enforcement search a home for drugs, the warrant allowed deputies to utilize breaching equipment to force open doorway(s), entry doors, exit doors, and locked containers and to search all rooms, garages and storage rooms, and outbuildings of any kind large enough to accommodate a small goat.

ehh it was probably a mistake

so i thought the goat was 9 years old, not the former pet of a 9-year-old child. when you said 'to teach her a lesson' i thought you still meant the goat.

so what's the reasoning on the misleading topic title?

*Facepalms* fuckin typo, it's supposed to say a 9 year old's goat. As in her literal goat by the goat being 9 years old. Gonna delete the topic and repost.

Edit: just gonna keep this topic opened even with the typo. Too many already responded.

And I would drive 500 miles, and I would have drove 500 more, just to be the sheriff that killed a 9 year olds goat, too see them crying on the floor.

Joking aside this is horrible.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep / Bladerunner spoilers:

So this isn't really touched upon in the movie much but basically all animals are either extinct or critically endangered and there's a culture that it's the duty of every living human to care for at least one animal in order to help keep them alive. Enter the voight-kampff test (aka why aren't you helping the tortoise?) Which is the primary means by which people can discover Androids pretending to be humans as they are all violent psychopaths unable to feel empathy with animals.

Anyway the point where I'm going here with all this is at the end of the book Deckard has finally saved up enough money to buy a real animal and spends it on a goat. Rachel who is mad at being rejected goes out of her way to deckards apartment and kills it.

The chief executive of the fair tried to make this some moral high ground argument about learning that you must abide by the rules. But there is another lesson that was on the table here compromise.

It wasnt like the family was trying to get away with a goat that someone else had bought - they wanted to pay and make things square. It was a State Senator who paid for the goat in an auction, and when the family reached out to his office, the senator apparently was ok with the family paying for the goat and having it sent to a farm.

This is just some weird power play by the chief executive, and then the police went way overboard with the enforcement part of it.

Making an exception for you will only teach [our] youth that they do not have to abide by the rules, Silva [Shasta District Fair Chief Executive] wrote back to Long in an email reviewed by The Times dated June 28, 2022. Also, in this era of social media this has been a negative experience for the fairgrounds as this has been all over Facebook and Instagram.

That same day, B.J. Macfarlane, livestock manager for the Shasta Fair Assn., sent Long a text message.

We need to make arrangements to get goat back today, the text read. If not law enforcement is going to be brought in on this.

Long also offered to repay the fair district and the bidder whatever costs had been incurred. That included the winning bid of $902 made by state Sen. Brian Dahle (R-Bieber) and the 7% cut that the fair was entitled to of $63.14.

In her June 27, 2022, letter to Silva, Long also pointed out that she had already been in contact with Dahles office about his bid, and that a representative told her the lawmaker was okay with the alternative solution of the goat getting to be donated to a farm that does weed abatement.

I know this is your gimmick but let me try and have an adult discussion with you.

The legal team said what the kid and her parent were offering was fair. The issue isnt the fact the cops killed the goat.

The issue here is that the fairground decided to kill the goat when they didnt have to teach the girl a lesson as per their own comms.

Bruh, they STOLE the goat. It was not their property. Imagine seeing a car you like, offering the owner a fair price for it, being rejected and then stealing said car. Is your defense still going to be "bUt I oFFeReD fAiR MArkEt VaLUE!"

It doesn't matter for what reason they wanted their property returned to them, it is THEIRS.

Not the mother. From my read of it, it sounds like they originally bought the goat with the daughter's understanding that it would be sold as livestock, but the year leading up to it was a very traumatic one for her due to losing multiple grandparents and she wound up forming a strong bond with the goat as a result. The mother tried to pull the goat out of the sale so her daughter wouldn't have to experience another loss and could keep the pet that gave her comfort.

I know this board is lousy with it's "ACAB" bullshit but this is fucking cut and dry. She committed larceny (on top of probable breaking and entering) and the cops recovered stolen property. What happened after that isn't fucking important.

If the girl had made a bike and auctioned it off for $900 and then the mom went and stole it back this'd be a whole different story but boo fucking hoo, the goat got turned into sausages and you're all crying about it.

You don't get to steal something and then offer to pay it back after the fact unless its part of a plea deal.

The person who bought the goat was absolutely fine with them buying it back and sending it somewhere it could live happily. The situation was resolved and everybody was happy with the outcome.

But then the sellers talked to the person who bought the bike, said they would reimburse them for what they paid, the buyer said ok that's fine, and then the bike store instead called the cops who came over and threw the bike into an industrial shredder to teach the kid a lesson.
