Ideally we'd be funding just about everything better, with funds taken right out of the unnecessarily bloated defense budget.
Cities generally don't have their own armies, give or take an overzealous police department.

Oahu, Hawaii has a really good public transit system. You can get anywhere you want to go on the island on the bus system, within an hour or two. Monthly bus passes are cheap and unlimited use for the month.
The rest of the country could learn a thing or two from Hawaii.

For places where it's convenient, sure, but I assume such places already have systems in place. Spending money to improve those systems makes sense, but there are vast areas where it'd be largely useless.

I wasn't talking about city government. I meant federal.

Now you're back to asking some farmer in Bumfuck, Arkansas to pay for a rail project in Los Angeles.
That's how you get MAGAs.

No, raising taxes to pay for it is how you get MAGAts.

This is a mere reappropriation of the tax money that would otherwise already be going to the military. Of what's already being spent on that, we could take a significant portion of it to pay for things we actually need, without raising taxes a single red cent.

Step 1: remove the US military from places that are not-US.

Do you ever apply this logic in reverse? Is federal highway funding how you get coastal libs?

We need to make a trade where they teach us how to build bike infrastructure/public transit and we teach them how to cook

Nationalize the rail system, allow cities to build better public transit through more funding, and implement a VMT tax

Yes, and it's not even debatable.

Many places in the U.S. are nigh impossible to live in without a car and what doesn't get talked about enough is how cities being designed around car dependency makes being poor even more difficult.

Also car dependency leads to massive parking lots that take up a bunch of space that could go towards....literally anything else.
If you ever tried to find a parking space that wasn't overt rent-seeking, pretty much all there is, is walmart or other big-box stores. Parking downtown has always been a mess, regardless of which downtown.
