what if Sora just traveled to each Final Fantasy world? And instead of Donald and Goofy, he is friends with a FF1 Black Mage and an FF1 Fighter

It would have been more popular if it was just FF... imo

I mean the franchise as a whole, not just the initial hype of the game. I think it would just be more appealing to people who play games like that.

All the Disney characters is probably why I could never get into it. If they replaced them all with big mommy milker waifus it might be my favorite series to this day.

If it was FF mainly it would had been more popular considering Disney made the later sequels worse and didnt do squat with merchandising the series into TVs, movies, or into their theme parks.

I, personally, would have had zero interest in it. The Disney aspect is what made me want to play it.

No, PS2 was casual central, Disney characters and Final Fantasy characters in the same place was the meta.

No, the first 2 games all felt like a grand cross over of sorts so the Disney and OC characters never felt that out of place.

At least not until they became more and more disconnected from the main story. Until KH3 and the story couldn't even bother giving a reason for the cast to visit them anymore.

i was gonna say no, but your alternative of traveling to the FF worlds is a thousand times more interesting, something the fans have been asking from the beginning. But even I have to admit Donald and Goofy do bring a lot of charm to the series especially when Donald bants with every character.

Gamers love generic anime waifu and edgy teen boy, though.

I was always under the impression that the merging of the two worlds (Disney and FF) was what made it popular in the first place.

Would have been seen as just another generic JRPG otherwise. But I could be wrong I guess.

It was one part of it but I think again the perfect storm kinda happened. Anime and Gaming was becoming a bit more popular, Disney was still a power house at that point, early 2000s saw a huge techno music phase.

FF is my favorite game series, so I absolutely wouldve still played it. But it reached the levels it did because you could run around inside a bunch of different Disney levels.

If anything, the Disney appeal of Kingdom Hearts probably created a few new FF fans because they played KH and thought Who the hell are these people Ive never heard of before? Like Leon?

Nope! Disney and FF together is what made it so amazing and memorable! Waiting for KH2 is one of my favorite memories cause it brought me and my older brother closer together! We were both so excited waiting for it! We watched GameStop gameplay videos over and over and over and over! Reading the game informer magazine while pooping(not together) just talking about how amazing its going to be!

I was already a fan of Final Fantasy at that point, so I would have played it without Disney. But I remember when the game was first announced and a crossover between Disney and Squaresoft was a huge deal.

I'd love it if SE made a Kingdom Hearts style game where you visit different Final Fantasy worlds. They would need to keep it simple and clean though. We don't need another overly complicated crossover series.
