Gameplay wise, what a boring video game. What do people love about it so much?

Snake Eater and Guns of the Patriots are better.

for its time, the gameplay, options, and attention to detail were in a league of their own.

I think a lot of the writing and characterization are dumb, but it had some interesting, still relevant themes, and the techno, cyberpunk atmosphere was really cool.

back when it came out: 9-9.5/10; now: 8.5/10.

IMO.

It was my first Metal Gear and still the best ganeplay of them all imo. The big shell was set up nicely for the stealth gameplay.

Gameplay: 10/10. Groundbreaking for its time, still holds up today, better than most current gen action stealth games

Graphics: 10/10. Shattered my 10 year old brain when it first came out, sometimes forgot that I was not playing a movie

Story: 10/10 Kojima at his absolute best. Predicted how shitty the Internet would become 20 years in advance. Trolled MGS1 fans by giving us Raiden. Had massive themes about propaganda and information control that have been prevalent for the past 100 years. We get to see Raiden misgendered and grabbed by the president

Characters: 10/10. Ultimate Solid Snake and Otacon bromance. Solidus Snake is an absolute chad. We got Fatman who literally rolls around on skates. We have Hermes larping as an erotic, campy vampire. Raiden was sort of lame at the time but he got on his sigma grindset and we got MGS4 and Revengeance Raiden so it was all worth it.

Music: 10/10. Come on, do I really need to say anything here? You get that pulse-pounding escape music going in your head just from seeing this: "!"

This topic: 0/0. Terrible opinion. Suggesting that the clunky, convoluted, and uneven Guns of the Patriots is better than MGS2 makes me sick to my stomach. You should be ashamed of yourself TC

In the context of 2001 it was an absolutely groundbreaking game.

imo it's got the best level design in a metal gear game. other mgs games do some stuff better, but i never had more fun actually sneaking around than i did in mgs2

I can't remember if I played that one or not. I may have just watched a friend play it.

I loved the gameplay.

MGS1 was already a major achievement in terms of game design, but MGS2 took that core and expanded it from a square into a cube. The depth was incredible for its time... and honestly, the attention to detail even 20+ years later is at a level of excellence that many modern games fail to match.

Its funny that everyone is all up in arms about how awesome it was but when it came out, people HATED the game. They hated that you didn't play as Snake and that was all everyone talked about.

Good game, easily one of the most replayable Metal Gear games, but the story is overrated and the boss fights aren't the best. The VR missions in Substance have way too much copy-and-paste, it's more or less 100 missions that are repeated 5 times each.

I love the setting and the story. I love the idea of having all of these zany characters in a small area. Snake becomes more badass when you view him as an outsider. Then by the end of the game, Raiden is just as badass.

It was alright, not as good as mgs1 which is a masterpiece. I got all the way up to the fatman fight and just lost interest after that. Raiden sucked and so did the dead cell bosses.

this is my favorite game ever if you didnt play it on ps2 in the early 2000s you will never understand its true greatness. The story. The characters.

This game IMO is the perfect sequel perfect story I almost feel like I need to play MGS1 before MGS2 just to get the full story.

the art work, the factions (foxhound, deadcell, genome army, GRU etc) villains triple crossing people. The legend of Solid Snake. Its beautiful but I can see how someone in 2023 wouldnt get it because its fucking awesome and most stuff these days sux
