Yesterday I saw a dude at the store starting eating grapes from his cart

He just grabbed a pack of grapes and put it in his cart and started eating them while he was shopping. I'm pretty sure he's gonna pay for it but still that's like trashy as fuck to do shit like that.

You say 'before' paying for it, as if you think she intended to buy the whole bag she opened.

It's one family and they're Walmart. There's probably more to the story than her simply just eating a sucker

Its not unusual for large bureaucracies(governmental, or corporate) to overemphasize the letter of the law over the spirit.

There are sometimes valid reasons to consume something prior to paying for it.

It was a Dum-Dum like the greeters hand out? I have never been given anything when entering or exiting a Walmart in 30 years.

I sure did, but none of them involved committing crimes.

I imagine their philosophy is something like...

"If we caught you stealing once, you've probably stolen before. If we let you off the hook for stealing the first time we catch you, you'll probably steal again."

It makes more sense to tell them not to come back than it does to let them in and then devote a bunch of attention to making sure they don't steal any more stuff. It starts with candy (or maybe it didn't start there) but eventually escalates.

I worked at Target for a couple of years, and I constantly found empty toy packages hanging on the shelf. Kids would come in, open the package, drop the little Bakugan sphere into their pocket, and walk out with it. Casual as can be. It's like an $8-$10 toy, but it adds up quick if they do it multiple times.

I'm a Walmart Asset Protection Associate. Legally she stole. The likely story is the father when confronted got mad and started a fight. They were thereby banned from the store.

Isn't it completely legal to eat something in a store before paying for it? I hate it when people do this, but my father always did and never got in trouble. I've heard that this is perfectly fine on here for decades too.

Am I missing something or did the law change or what?

As long as you pay before leaving the premises I don't see how it should be illegal

So its not clear but it sounds like they had the cops there already when he came to pick up his daughter.

So if she had not made an attempt to leave the store they cant call her shoplifting. Its not shoplifting until you pass by the last opportunity to pay. If she just opened the candy but did not leave the store, they are in the wrong.

If were calling the penny-value theft of a sucker a crime Im certain everyone here has committed a crime whether its pushing another kid (assault!) or not going to the crosswalk to cross the street every time (jaywalking!) or cutting through a neighbors yard (trespassing!)

I cant even imaginate people eating stuff before they pay.

When I was working at Wegmans I'd frequently have people (adults!) hand me things like a half-full drink bottle or an empty chip bag to scan because they'd already eaten it which I thought was really shitty but nobody ever did anything about it which I guess is why they kept doing it.

Regardless of what she did was trivial and Walmart overreacted, the fact remains that the father left the kid unattended and IMO that's the bigger issue and more people should care about that.

She's 12, not 2. You were never left without an adult when you were 12? Like in 7th grade?

Pretty sure it's normal to trust your kids without supervision at that age.
