Curious if this is the last straw in a long string of nonsense by this particular family. Given how little typical store employees care, I cannot imagine escalation to this extent without a vendetta.

I was "banned" from my local Walmart because a girl I was with was spray painting her name on the spray paint demo section area.

Went right back multiple times. I guess this was before the crazy camera stuff they have now since I was like 13-14?

Yesterday I saw a dude at the store starting eating grapes from his cart

He just grabbed a pack of grapes and put it in his cart and started eating them while he was shopping. I'm pretty sure he's gonna pay for it but still that's like trashy as fuck to do shit like that.

Why was she left alone in Walmart to begin with?

She knows better at that age to do anything like that, she's lucky she wasn't arrested.

Theft is theft, doesn't matter how terrible a store is.

My first time reading the article, my impression was that she opened a bag of candy, took a single dum dum, but didnt have the bag with her, showing her intent to buy it?

If thats the case, then fair. If she had the bag with her and was walking around with it, then this really nitpicky of them.

On the subject of people eating things in stores before paying for them: My mother has to do this on occasion. She's a diabetic and when her blood sugar gets too low, she gets really, really shaky. It's a choice between opening a box a little early or passing out in the middle of the store.

There are sometimes valid reasons to consume something prior to paying for it.

I'm a Walmart Asset Protection Associate. Legally she stole. The likely story is the father when confronted got mad and started a fight. They were thereby banned from the store.

I always get the same BS excuse "I can pay for it now!" Sure, if you did why steal? And this isn't an overreaction. You steal from Walmart and you aren't coming back. Just go to another Walmart. Anyways, this never deters shoplifters. Often times we just let them dig their own grave. Let them steal a felony quantity and now they're fucked.
Gobstoppers12 posted...
I imagine their philosophy is something like...

"If we caught you stealing once, you've probably stolen before. If we let you off the hook for stealing the first time we catch you, you'll probably steal again."

It makes more sense to tell them not to come back than it does to let them in and then devote a bunch of attention to making sure they don't steal any more stuff. It starts with candy (or maybe it didn't start there) but eventually escalates.

I worked at Target for a couple of years, and I constantly found empty toy packages hanging on the shelf. Kids would come in, open the package, drop the little Bakugan sphere into their pocket, and walk out with it. Casual as can be. It's like an $8-$10 toy, but it adds up quick if they do it multiple times.

As a Walmart AP Associate this is true. She's 12. If she was 6 ok but, she's 12 that's theft. How do you not know this at 12? A 12 year old should know right from wrong.

I'm really fucking confused here.

Isn't it completely legal to eat something in a store before paying for it? I hate it when people do this, but my father always did and never got in trouble. I've heard that this is perfectly fine on here for decades too.

Am I missing something or did the law change or what?
I think its up to the store but Ive never seen a store that bans people from opening something before they buy it. Its when they leave it on the shelf or dont pay when it becomes a problem. But theres been plenty of times Ive opened a bottle of coke in eyesight of store managers and they dont give a fuck so long as I present the half empty bottle at the checkout and pay.

Its very similar to you broke it you bought it policies. Its not stealing unless you left the premises without paying

So its not clear but it sounds like they had the cops there already when he came to pick up his daughter.

So if she had not made an attempt to leave the store they cant call her shoplifting. Its not shoplifting until you pass by the last opportunity to pay. If she just opened the candy but did not leave the store, they are in the wrong.

This is it. Its very common for people to eat and open stuff theyre going to purchase.

Hear hear.

Jaywalking should only be criminal if it is done recklessly.

Any officer who tickets someone for crossing with a huge window of safety in a spot with a huge gap between crossings(or at all if done safely) deserves a beating.

Our infastruture is so hostile to non drivers fuck off officer. I jaywalk all the time but I am hyper cautious.

I am not walking back extra 1000+ft to wait longer at a busy intersection where drivers routinely nearly run you down when you have the right to cross.

Cautious jaywalking is honestly safer then using the crossing in my area. These drivers are fucking shit.

When I was working at Wegmans I'd frequently have people (adults!) hand me things like a half-full drink bottle or an empty chip bag to scan because they'd already eaten it which I thought was really shitty but nobody ever did anything about it which I guess is why they kept doing it.

Ill be honest, if Ive done this with a drink and medication bottle for a headache or my wife having a sudden allergic reaction, but only during those.

To me its ok in crisis, as long as the intent is to pay and prevent further problems, but it should not be a regular thing.

I guess you're right but in the end she still stole out of his supervision and I'm sure she wouldn't have if he was with her. And the father even said the advice from this is to watch your kids at Walmart. I personally wouldn't let a 12 year old that I'm responsible for out of my site at a store especially if I'm not sure what they're fully capable of.
