SAN SALVADOR, Feb 24 (Reuters) - El Salvador's government moved thousands of suspected gang members to a newly opened "mega prison" on Friday, the latest step in a controversial crackdown on crime that has caused the Central American nation's prison population to soar.

"This will be their new home, where they won't be able to do any more harm to the population," President Nayib Bukele wrote on Twitter.

Around 2,000 accused gang members were moved to the 40,000-person-capacity prison, considered to be the largest in the Americas, early Friday morning...

...Bukele asked his allies in El Salvador's Congress to pass a state of exception last year, which has since been extended several times, that suspends some constitutional rights after a dramatic spike in murders attributed to violent gangs.

Since then, more than 64,000 suspects have been arrested in the anti-crime dragnet. Arrests can be made without a warrant, private communications are accessible by the government, and detainees no longer have the right to a lawyer.

Human rights organizations argue that innocent people have been caught up in the policy, including at least dozens who have died in police custody.

But Bukele's anti-gang push remains widely popular with Salvadorans, and the country's security minister told Reuters it would continue until all criminals are captured.

That's a pretty alarming statement. If I'm reading this correctly, they're skipping due process, so what exactly is a criminal at that point?

The thing here is that things were already alarming in El Salvador due to the cartels before this.

I think this is one of those things that doesn't have an easy answer.

I posted on a previous topic regarding this subject. Overall it's a good thing. He previously said they could all kill themselves in jail. They ran sacked the whole country and arrested anyone with a gang tattoo. They would even give rewards to those who would report seeing anyone who wasn't arrested and hiding at the time. They hired civilians to destroy all the gang gravestones as well and to clean up all the graffiti. Tourism has gone up and people can actually go out at night and be safe once again. My mother in law went this past December and said it was the first time in years you could go for a walk in the night with no problems and businesses still open.

A 3 minute video explaining the start of things, it's amazing how fast the country changed in 6 months or so. It is currently one of the safest countries in the world with any type of crime. These people shown all have gang related tattoos.

How old are you? Common sense says they removed it by getting a tattoo over it. No ex gang member is going to go around still having a tattoo from previous gangs and risk getting killed by opposing gang members specially if they aren't affiliated anymore......

Looks like 496 down from 1147. They were the worst at one point with 103 killings per 100000 of the population. Of course they don't count gang deaths in the statistics so there is that.
