The California State University Fullerton is being extra cautious today after a student sent an email to their professor asking for class to be cancelled for the good of humanity due to the Nintendo Direct presentation airing later today.

While the individual later followed up and admitted it was a bad joke, it was still enough to put people on edge. The CSUF Police Department did believe the email to contain a perceived vague threat. Because of this, therell be more safety measures in place today at the campus out of an abundance of caution.

The full notice reads:

Tonight, we were made away of a perceived vague threat to campus received by a professor via email. The email referenced a once-in-a-lifetime event that would occur tomorrow, February 8, and the individual urged the professor to cancel class for the good of humanity.

After hours of investigation by our detectives, we learned of a Nintendo Direct event that would occur at the exact date and time the individual suggested the class be canceled.

The individual, believed to be a CSUF student, then reached back out to the professor via email admitting it was a bad joke regarding the Nintendo Direct event.

Out of an abundance of caution, additional officers will be on campus tomorrow, student Community Service Officers and Community Service Specialists will be highly visible, and our K9 team will walk the campus and buildings.

We understand that a threat of any kind, real or not, causes many to fear for their safety. Please know we will do all we can to ensure the safety of our campus community.

Nintendo Directs are often seen as events to be celebrated as they contain exciting news and announcements for fans. In this case, perhaps things were taken a bit too far.

Todays Nintendo Direct will air at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET / 10 PM in the UK / 11 PM in Europe.

What a dumbass. It's not like you can't just watch the video later.

The student is a tool for doing that, but c'mon. We all know what that phrase means.

Making a big deal out of it seems almost spiteful.

Seems like they could have saved "hours of investigation" by simply contacting the student, and the additional security measures after they found out it was a joke are just a complete unnecessary waste

Couldn't the student just not show up, and no one would care

Student was so dumb for calling this a joke, he could have easily got away with saying he wanted to watch the Nintendo direct instead of going to class so he tried... which is probably what actually happened

Sure, but that's not how it was phrased, nevermind that it came from a not anonymous student who apologized shortly thereafter.

I dont think that wasting time on nonsense just to put out visuals is taking safety seriously.

I think people are taking the topic title too seriously. No where in the email was nintendo direct mentioned. The email seems to be "there's an event happening and for the good of humanity you should cancel class". Which absolutely does sound concerning, particularly now-a-days.

Concerning yes, and should definitely have been looked into, but the heightened security presence after they already got to the bottom of it is dumb as hell

The security after is surely unnecessary and only cya move. But the professor alerting authorities to the email was the absolute right move. The other poster is implying that the professor over reacted by alerting authorities.

Schools: Videogames are bad for children! They teach them that guns are good.
Also Schools: Let's have military force in the school, visible guns and K-9 units. Surely students wont get traumatized by this.
