Seems similar thing happened in 1984. That wasnt that long ago why did so many people in the country vote for the GOP back then to the point where it was a massive blowout.

A few reasons

  • Boomers are a fairly conservative generation and always have been. Nixon won the youth vote in 1972 for instance. The Democratic Party was going through a series of internal disputes starting in the late 60s onward, so they weren't in the best position to adapt to changing political tides.
  • The Democratic candidates in both those years were complete disasters (for different reasons, but still disasters nonetheless)
  • The two parties were a lot less ideologically rigid and voters were more "swingy" in big numbers in those days. Nixon was a vehement conservative, but he did popular things like creating the EPA, the Clean Water Act, and increased spending on Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security by a ton.

Eh, while his administration did a lot of damage to the image and trust in the office, Nixon isnt even on the top 10 list of worst president imo

CA went Republican for almost the entire Cold War period. 1964 was the exception because almost everyone was blue.

Americans are dumb. Now imagine if we let everyone run wild with the popular vote with their bad opinions

It was a different party back then. Nixon & Regan changed the party with thier southern & religious right policies, respectively. It went from the party of Lincoln, of emancipation, etc. to the party of racists & weird Christian conservatives. The Christians aren't so bad I suppose, but the racist connotation that the Republicans have from Nixon's southern strategy has cause a ton of headaches for the party, especially in the modern era.
