But I agree with whoever said Mad Max. The game had some good moments to it but all the open world stuff was horrible.

Ghost of Tsukima's overworld definitely overstayed its welcome when you realized that while all the pretty vistas were great, the actual human homes was full of people just living with corpses all over the place without cleaning them up and almost all the quests housed in said open world was MMO trash that tried to pretend it was more meaningful with some sort of lesson at the end.

By the third chapter's biome unlock all desire to explore was gone from my soul.

Only a few games in recent memory have benefited from being open world. Spider-Man (PS4), GTAV, and RDR2 utilize the concept well and have stories worth their scope.

Breath of the Wild would have been cooler if it were half the size and devoted more specific attention to dungeon and item design.

I think Ghost of Tsushima's open world had the depth of a really pretty puddle but I don't think there's enough there to hold up a solid linear game either.

I disagree with some of those mentioned.

Elden Ring surprisingly worked incredibly well as an open world game. Dark Souls IV would have been decent, but they went beyond expectations.

The concept behind Pokemon S/V is great but not the game itself. It needed a lot more time and effort to make it feel like a current gen game. Pokemon has a lot of potential as open world (PLA kind of showed this already), but it needs level scaling somehow.

Halo Infinite on the other hand was a good experiment to make, but probably shouldn't be the future of the franchise.
