As more automakers put factory features behind paywall, were racing towards a bleak future

https://adguard.com/en/blog/subscriptions-cars-mercedes-netflix.html

The future is you rent everything because that is more profitable.

Notice you no longer own a bunch of cds, dvds, etc. (maybe you do but average person don't)
That is because you being a subcriber to Netflix or Spotify is more profitable.

Look at how they keep pushing digital games. You don't own a digital game, you rent it. They can void your license anytime they want as Sony proved.

Now stupid consumers will buy these dumb cars and it will turn out that we start getting Refrigerators that have microtransactions and even toasters.
Look at your phones. Do you own your smart phone or you just renting it from the carrier? Even if you own it, does it work without a monthly fee to the carrier?

How about where you live? You renting?

Welcome to

Own nothing and be happy

https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/106irrm/as_more_automakers_put_factory_features_behind/

Also FYI turns out Elon Musk and Tesla apparently made this popular.
Aren't Billionaires a net good to society? /sarcasm

They think they can revoke a digital licence, but they are wrong. If they say you are no longer allowed to download a game a steam or something even after you paid for it, too bad for the company, there are other doors to get the game through. If Nintendo say you cant play your switch games your bought previously on the switch 2 when it releases, Nintendo can fuck off because emulators exist

from comments of video an interesting case and point:

one example that is truly horrfying to me is when companies like monsanto own seeds and sue
innocent farmers for growing from seeds in the fruits they grew.

its bizarre. how lays could copywright a potatoe. a whole potatoe type and farmers were taken to court for just growing a potatoe.

Paying to start your car: a dystopian fantasy or the not-too-distant future?

In principle, so-called in-car microtransactions are no different from in-app purchases you make to upgrade, say, your VPN service to have a better speed and more locations. The problem, however, is that some carmakers arent just adding flashy new features and putting them behind paywall they are starting to take away features that are usually free.

In 2018, BMW drew massive backlash after it introduced a yearly subscription fee for Apple CarPlay, a smartphone integration system that most other carmakers, including Kia and Mazda, made standard. BMW argued that the $80 annual subscription fee would allow it to keep the base cost of new BWMs at bay but autolovers were not having it. A year later, BMW backpedaled on its plan.

One could argue that once you have splashed on a luxury car, then you have to bear whatever additional costs are thrown your way. But it is one thing for luxury automakers to behave outrageously; another, perhaps more worrisome, is that mainstream brands have also caught on to this trend and are now trying to monetize what little software they have rather than pursue innovation. This approach seems dubious, and we are far from alone in thinking so.

Last year, the worlds largest automaker, Toyota, found itself on the receiving end of a torrent of criticism after it bundled a key fob remote start with one of its subscription packages. The feature allows drivers to warm up a vehicles engine without actually getting into the car. Toyota initially confirmed the functionality would become part of a paid subscription and cost Toyota owners $8 a month. After the plan was met with outrage, Toyota claimed that the inclusion of the key fob remote start in the subscription plan was an inadvertent result of a relatively small technical decision, and promised to review it.

With how much simpler electric vehicles are compared to internal combustion, I hope to see a lot more car companies open up and maybe even more homebrewing.

Simpler to catch your house on fire...
Even car accidents are simpler too. Every one of them catch fire as soon as the battery pack cracks open and oxygen touches the lithium.
So much simpler to just burn it to ground.

The average person isn't going to build their own car, record their own music, and develop their own video games, so they'll basically own nothing if they want to possess any part of a modern society. You'll have to drop off the grid and live a simple life to truly own all that you possess.

In a sense, you already do have to pay to start your car.
It's called "gasoline" and "oil".

It's crazy. In 2019 I bought a '06 Honda that came with a key fob. A year or so later I accidentally broke the casing and thought "okay, I still have the key itself so I can just use that and get rid of the fob"

Nope. The car would not start without registering the fob. So rather than go to a hardware store and have a new key made for like 10 bucks, I had to go to a specialty key place and get a new fob casing for like 100 bucks. They didn't have to replace the hardware, just the casing.

Since then, I've been super-duper extra cautious not to break my key.
This also means I only have one. If I need a spare key I'm pretty much fucked.

But see this is why I don't subscribe to any streaming service.

Not only do I not want to pay a monthly fee just to watch a handful of shows or movies that I'm interested in, but more often than not those get taken down for no reason anyway. It's much better to just own physical and watch whenever I want.

Same reason why I hate the "games as service" trend. Wanna play that 5 year old game you just got? Too bad, the servers have been disabled. The game is no longer playable by any legitimate means. That's assuming the game is even still available in some form.

Evangelion is a prime example of why this will always fail. Want fly me to the moon? Gotta own the actual 90s copies of it. It has been removed from streaming and even the recent release that has the original dub.

Similar some games will never again see the light of day beyond their original physical release.

Also, some things get erased as society deems the unfit for society. Sometimes for good but other times for ill.
