Is it because the stages are literal theater stages, and they're just running from one end of one to the other?

I really like that they're mostly pretty short. They almost can't overstay their welcome.

Huh, I was just playing it earlier today. They are pretty short, but that's not really a bad thing.

It's because the level design is more experimental in SMB3.

Modern 2D Mario level design found it's footing with SMW and NSMB DS, that's where the secret exits and "find three or five special coins in this stage" influenced the way the entire levels are made to accommodate for such secrets.

But I think the current "one gimmick per level" thing may have started with 3, even if it's more apparent from NSMB Wii onwards

It makes sense when you remember that the original SMB3 didn't have any sort of save or password feature

That's one of the reasons I never really got why people prefer it over SMW. I don't really ever feel engrossed in the levels at all.

yeah you couldnt save on the NES so you had to be able to beat the game in one sitting
there are a lot of levels though and each world has its own theme so overall its my favorite mario game

I remember the pyramid level feeling significantly longer than the others as a kid, but in hindsight I think it's just because I was shit at that level.

Now they all feel really fast, but that's probably because I've played the game many times a year for literally decades, haha.

Maybe that's why they introduced the fox tail.
