Goes both ways. I have similar issues, but less extreme. They arent tolerating and accommodating to you, dont have to be that to them. Usually its just a few words between people and some awkward silence, but it all depends. Do what you feel is right.

Thats my bloody point, just dont go or deal with it beforehand and tell them straight out you dont want to hear anything political at dinner and that is the price of your being there.

I'd say if you consent to go to a party with contentious people, you consent to listen to their bullshit for two hours. You shouldn't have to endure it. Tell them that any mentions of politics and you are leaving immediately. That's what I would do.
