So I actually had my hair long the whole time, ironically it was cutting it short that made me realize I'm a girl.

I wore it in a guy style ponytail.

Guys I'm so happy with myself for finally taking this step. I can be "one of the guys" without being a guy, and it's taken me this fucking long to realize that my gender dysphoria was because I was forcing myself to be a guy when I wasn't. I was never happy with how I looked, how I had to bind myself, how I was jealous of other guys.

Then yesterday I got a female haircut, saw myself in the mirror, and it was literally an immediate realization that this is who I am. I can still be my snarky-ass male-ish personality without having to be a guy.

It sounds like you finally got a chance to take a break from your busy life and think about what you really need to be yourself instead of what you thought you needed. You're exactly right when you say you don't have to do anything you don't want to in order to be friends with certain people.

I did everything I could to fit in with them, right down to dressing like them and trying to minimize my femininity. Over time I internalized it to the point where I didn't even realize that's what I had done, and just assumed that's how I should live. And then I got pregnant. And then I saw myself in a mirror, and I saw someone I liked instead of someone I've always hated.

I don't even know if I thought that deeply about it. I just lived in perpetual fear of not being like my friends I grew up with. When I hit puberty I hid it as best as I could. By the time I got to college I just kept doing it - wearing binders, guy clothes, etc. But I'd always see myself in the mirror and hate myself. And for the longest time I thought it was because I hated not being a guy, but it turns out it's because I hated being a guy.

I saw myself as a girl in the mirror yesterday and it was an instant surge of euphoria I can't describe. Like this is what I've been missing my entire life.
