ala FF9 and others

Skill trees always feel like 'decide between 2 potentially mediocre skills and spend your hard earned skill points, then reload the save to try out another segment of the skill tree'

Ultima Online still has my favorite skill system: You get a global skillpoint cap of like 700 points and can level any skill at any time just by using it. Each skill gets harder to master up to a maximum of 100 and if you don't use a skill the level decays over time. So if you want to be pure melee go nuts. Want to splash in some magic? You get to decide who melee skill you suck at. Want to give up maxxing any one skill to have more skills at a reasonably high level? Cool.

It's total freedom of choice.

Boo, decaying skills is shit game design. Even Final Fantasy II dropped that in every re-release.

Gear learning systems suck. There is absolutely nothing fun about throwing the next random piece of equipment you find on your character to learn its ability.

They eventually added the ability to "lock" a skill to keep it from decaying, but since there was no such thing as a skill reset in the game, the only way to "change class" on a character is to unlock a skill you want to give up so your new skill can siphon points from the one you want to lower.

And to be clear, the decay here was like 0.1 out of 100.0 total points lowering like once a week.

Ah, okay. Cool that you could lock skills.

I love when games do this right. I want to feel each job / class has a specific design and purpose and I want to experiment as much as I can with them.

I main issue with Final Fantasy is that it discards most auxiliary systems after one go of testing the water but not going near enough in-depth with it. FF9's system was amazing. I also want to see a better Sphere Grid with more actual choice and less illusion of choice.

The Crystarium should fuck off, though.

Playing "hot potato" with every new knife or something gets tedious very quickly. Also it's rarely more than a vector to plot-lock the good stuff that you'll probably no longer really need when the game finally lets you have it.
