Millionaire Martin Mobarak probed for torching $10M Frida Kahlo painting in NFT stunt

Who says crypto is going down in flames?

A Miami millionaire claimed to have burned a $10 million dollar work by renowned painter Frida Kahlo as part of an NFT launch and is now being investigated by officials in the late artists homeland of Mexico, according the countrys National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature.

Entrepreneur Martin Mobarak filmed himself apparently setting the small and colorful Kahlo drawing ablaze at an event in July, in a stunt that was meant to promote his sale of digital versions of the rare work, which is considered a national treasure in Mexico.

I hope that everyone here can understand it, I hope everyone can see the positive side, he said before removing what appeared to be a drawing, known as Fantasmones Siniestros, from its frame and setting it alight in a martini glass full of fuel.

Video from the event shows the image whither and curl in the flames as a small crowd cheers.

The event was ostensibly to promote Mobaraks sale of 10,000 unique NFT copies of Fantasmones Sinistros by his latest venture, Frida.NFT.

Mobarak has claimed the sale of the NFTs or non-fungible tokens will benefit the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico, Coyoacans Frida Kahlo Museum, and several charities dedicated to medical care for children.

What we are going to do is change the lives of thousands of children, Mobarak said...

While extraordinarily stupid, it seems inane that one could be charged for destroying their own property. If it's considered an "artistic monument," it shouldn't be allowed in a private collection in the first place.

Yup. I'm assuming he did this in Miami too, so Mexico can't do shit about it lol.

No one would do such a thing without unloading it to social media for clout.

Dunno what a multimillionaire would want or need to promote NFTs though. Maybe he's fallen on hard times.

Great, so now NFTs are leading to the destruction of things that have actual value.

Depends under what terms he purchased the painting. A rare painting with huge cultural significance wouldnt be the first nor weirdest thing to be sold with strings attached.

Or hell you can already (technically) get in trouble for improperly disposing of or handling certain things you can legally purchase. You purchase those things with the understanding that there's a responsibility attached to them.

That said I'd be surprised if he burned the real thing. It's the size of a post card and the evidence is a shitty cam video of some night party in Miami. Whole scenario smells like a scam. >_>

This. Also, I'd be both surprised and disappointed if that actually is/was a Kahlo, as it literally looks like a five-year old child's drawing.

https://www.artlistings.com/Magazine/Dennis-Hopper-s-Bullet-Hole-Andy-Warhol-Sells-for-302-500-at-Christie-s-69901

NEW YORK - An Andy Warhol portrait of Mao Zedong that actor Dennis Hopper shot two bullets through sold for $302,500 at Christie's on Tuesday, more than 10 times its high estimate.

The 1972 screenprint from Hopper's art collection is done in hues of mostly blues and greens, including a deep blue face for Mao, the founder of the modern communist state.

It had been had been estimated to sell for $20,000 to $30,000 at the two-day auction of hundreds of works from the actor's collection and personal memorabilia from his California home.

Mao was among Warhol's iconic subjects. Hopper's painting was unique because it included bullet holes fired after the notoriously wild actor got spooked and "mistook the portrait on his wall for Mao himself and shot at it," according to Christie's.

Hopper, who died of cancer last year aged 74, later showed Warhol the bullet holes, and the pair agreed to consider the work a collaboration. Warhol drew circles around the holes, labeling the one over Mao's right shoulder "warning shot" and the one at his upper left eyelid "bullet hole."..
