TC should check out the "official" decompiled port. Runs like a dream, has support for add-ons and mods, and has near-perfect customizable controls (and camera).

What makes it bizarre?
Move with stick, jump with A, punch/grab with B, crouch with Z.

Everything else is camera (C, L/R, D-pad)

64's camera is pretty bad but you mostly don't notice until you play romhacks that have the default camera still in imo

it's clear they knew the limitations of what they were working with and designed levels accordingly but you can't say the same for the fans

SM64 essentially pioneered the concept of a third person 3D camera, so it'd be ridiculous to expect it to be as good as modern camera systems.

Yeah, there are a few places in the game where the camera is annoying, but for the most part, they give enough space for the camera to be functional.

Obviously this is difficult to do with the N64 controller, but any game that had a button to put the camera behind you did it right

Super Mario 64 was basically a proof of concept experiment for console 3D platforming. Compared to its era, it was a mindshatteringly great game.

But yes, it has aged. Not Goldeneye 007 aged, but still aged.

Honestly, if anything, it's actually considerably more amazing that Mario 64 is still playable, when you consider what 3D games were like in 1996.

It's not ideal, but for its time the SM64 camera was incredibly innovative. The idea to tie it to a character following Mario around like a documentary filmmaker was a stroke of genius, and it explained some of the wonkiness in an in-universe way.

Spyro
Honestly I don't like the camera for Spyro. It sits in a fixed position aligned to the base characters head. So if Spyro turns his head left the camera will move left, etc. But since the camera is sits above Spyro the camera is prone to moving along with the player movements making the camera spin as Spyro moves. It's more noticable if Spyro charges in any direction suddenly really fast and the camera won't keep up force you to view the character model in a weird angle and potentially bumping into anything within your Blindspot.

Something like that. Spyro 1 and 2 where like that in the original ps1

I never remember having a problem with the camera in Conker's Bad Fur Day, and it had multiple changes in playstyle to work around as well.
