It is what you think it is. Its a condom. It helps protect the gear. You cant get these mics wet. Theres a lot of wind and a lot of rain, so we gotta do what we gotta do and that is put a condom on the microphone.

Whatever they could design and create would cost way too much compared to a box of condoms. They're practically perfect already for protecting sensitive sound equipment from moisture while being thin enough to not greatly affect the sound quality.
