It should be possible, but you'd have to try for it. The NPC you get it from will always walk towards you and talk on your turn so to avoid him you either have to go super fast or go in circles a bit to lead him away since you have more move than him. Or keep Sigurd surrounded on all sides by friends at all times so there's never a tile to talk to him from.

Just in the prologue, I feel like everyone is at constant threat! No idea how I should be distributing EXP.

I've saved 3 villages, the one at the top I saved with those 2 units that spawned on the second turn, and they almost ate it. Axe dude just can't dodge. Clearly you aren't meant to save every village. Got the speed ring which seems important!

I have the castle at the bottom surrounded, just waiting for the mage to make it down there first before starting the attack on those 4 stationary dudes. Had to save and step away for a second.

There's no con stat or an equivalent in this game, so weapon weight is a straight hit to your speed stat. Axes are the heaviest weapon type, so Lex is taking a pretty big hit to his speed stat whenever he has a weapon equipped. Azelle has it pretty bad too, being stuck with heavy Fire magic until the other tomes start showing up (Fire magic is identical to the other two types except it's much heavier. This is true for every level of magic).

When I realized about 2 turns ago that some villages were a lost cause it did relieve me some. I don't know if that's going to be the case moving forward, but at least for now...I hope I didn't miss any items.

What's the deployments size and such in this game? Should I be splitting up exp? I've been letting lower level allies finish enemies off, something Sigurd can't so since he melts everything in one round lol.

There isn't really a deployment size limit in FE4. You can use everyone.

Everyone caps at 30 at this game, and level doesn't reset on promotion. Additionally, there's 7 rounds of arena battles every chapter that you can go through for experience, but your weaker units probably can't win all of the rounds.

OK, so I've heard some about the arena thing, but was a little confused. Are there 7 rounds a chapter TOTAL, or per CHARACTER?

Oh, and the foot unit situation is kind of dire lol. Cavalry moves so far, it's like everyone who doesn't have a horse is a general.

Each chapter has 7 set rounds that are always the same.

Each character can attempt to beat all 7.

7 rounds per character.

Foot units have some special skills to make up for it, but yeah, FE4 definitely makes you want to use your horses.

Prologue down, feel like I ran a marathon.

Sigurd ended up level 8, and the gap was too extreme, so I used the boss to farm everyone to level 5 (I think someone hit 6). I had some, I assume, bad levelups with only 1 point in them that I needed to make up for.

Sigurd is...a fucking God, holy shit. Everything bows the knee to him, it's unreal.

The Christmas Cavs stand out from eachither a lot, in so many other games the red cav only does a little bit more than the green one but never doubles in the first few chapters, and the same goes here except the damage difference between them per strike is much more significant, so they both have their place. Canto in this game is busted as fuck, stack, move, change weapon? Christ.

I hope I'm not fucking up grinding with the heal staff, I saw it was pretty expensive to repair compared to the weapons.

I actually did end up making it to all the villages once I realised most of the enemies were being static, even though I only got 500g out of the last one. Once you're actually in the flow/in control of the situation, it's all much less daunting than the map size would have you think.

Still need to learn all the skills. I've got the math down pretty tight at least, I know what determines when I double and calculating damage is an extra step having to do math but it's easy to get sued to.

Traversal is definitely the most noteable flaw so far. I can't imagine I give the General unit too much attention.

I wasn't thinking about who god the Speed Ring what with how trading works in this game, it ended up going to Finn. Obviously he doesn't do to great on this map due to triangle, but he looks solid and also have the doubling skill.

Pretty fascinated, it all feels so different. Diffing the little bit of narrative I've been handed so far, too.

There are definitely still going to be situations where foot soldiers are useful, but yes mounted units are way better in FE4 due to map size.

I don't feel like Arden should have been able to get through 5 arena rounds on turn 1???

When you check a weapon's stats there's a little star and a number by it, which shows the number of enemies you've killed with that specific weapon. When it hits 50, the weapon will give the Critical skill to anyone using it, and every kill beyond 50 will add +1 crit rate up to 100 kills giving +50.

In this game, Silver is a straight upgrade over Steel, which is a straight upgrade over Iron. So Sigurd has no more reason to ever use the Steel Sword, so pawn it and give it to someone else. Alec and Arden are going to make much better use of it than Sigurd ever will from now on.

At least Ethyln is already at 10 so I can afford to grind out those 20 exp per use mend staffs, though without arena....I assume I'll just need to let her save the villages.

So taking each castle is basically like an FE map all in itself.

I actually REALLY dig the castle management stuff. Not surprising considering my favorite stuff in 3H was the management stuff lol.

There are two hard stopping points in the Arena that are a sticking point for most characters: the Myrmidon and the Wind Mage. Both of those crush someone seemingly without fail, other Tha Ethlyn who crushed the Wind Mage but obviously can't get past the last dude (I mean she can dodge like 9 attacks in a row but she only does 1 damage without the crit so it's still not enough).

Sigurd, Finn, and Ayra beat him no problem.

I can already picture what a remake would do in my head: Each castle is a hub you walk around in, and after taking a Castle it auto regroups you there. All the romance stuff is handled with castle stuff rather than on the field.

You're going to get two staves that are really good for grinding exp this chapter, so I'd wait until you get those before you start grinding. Dew can also pass money to anyone he wants, so you can use him to pass money to Ethlyn and Aideen. It's not the hardest thing here since there's a bunch of axe users.

Dew stole 5k from that second waves of axe users, and he started with so much that he's loaded, so good to know! I ended up buying him the Slim Sword from the shop, too. Sold Sigurd's old sword to Alec since I keep Arden guarding the base for now. Bought the Javelin for finn. Don't see much reason to buy the Iron Lance for anyone? Would buy Lex the Steel Axe, but he's getting a much better axe this chapter for free I think?

There's no real reason to buy any of the axes in this game. Lex is the only one who can use them unpromoted, and all of the promoted units that can use them can use swords and lances too, so there's no reason for them to use axes.

Also, any weapons you don't buy are still going to be in the shop for every chapter from now on, so don't worry about buying up everything since it'll still be there if you need it later.

Either him or Noish for a +5 crit rate. You could give it to Ethlyn too, but I doubt you're using her much for combat.

Eh, he doesn't need much money anyway, since his Bargain skill lets him buy stuff for half price, so he can basically trade items for free. That with the bonus money you get for keeping castles safe is enough for anything he needs to do at the start of the chapter.

You're going to notice a recurring trend where these enemy types (and Generals) are constant arena walls, especially the myrmidons

I always roll my eyes a little when people talk about a hypthetical remake letting you freely trade items, because that would completely change the game, but I do feel like choosing how much money thieves/lovers give would be a nice QoL improvement.

That said Dew accrues money insanely fast and barely needs it for himself, so it's not really a problem that he gives it all away.

Friend of mine told me to potentially start considering pairings now that her and Adean are in board. Adean/Midayl seem like a cannon thing so probably that, but Arya...might wait until I see more characters, unless that's gonna make things difficult.

Ayra's kids are going to have good combat regardless of who you pick since Ayra's skillset is so busted. Just beware that Astra can't proc with Luna or Sol, if you were going to try that to make them even more busted.

Alright, this guy coming up has a Magic Ring so...I would just assume Azel?

Man the different approach to this game is so buck wild.

Oh, and do I get to use the last castle or is it just an auto end to the chapter?

None of the pairings are really canon (though some are essentially canonized by Thracia 776) but there are pairings like Adean/Midayl where it's clear the characters are into each other, and usually that corresponds to faster love growth and/or unique conversations. Midayl's not the only one who likes Adean though so even if you stick to those, you have options!

The reason to start thinking about it now is because love between characters grows even when you don't want it to, and there's nothing like in later games where you have to accept the S-rank support in a menu to finalize it, it'll just happen without even telling you.

And IIRC the last castle auto ends the chapter

I'll have to put some thought. Trying to not get to optimization heavy.

OK so that means I'll be wanting to take new boy guy and Lex once he gets his new axe back down to the old castle to do arena, gotcha.

Most of my early FE4 chapters ended with sitting my intended pairs next to each other for 25 or 50 turns or whatever(I forget what the max growth per chapter was). Or anytime there was an early pause in a chapter.

Ah Jamke. The devs really liked him so they gave him a bunch of cool skills and a good weapon. Too bad his lack of a horse means that Midir is still better.

I was wondering exactly how Lex got his Brave Axe....lol.

Unfortunately, he gets Pursuit as a class skill rather than a personal skill, so he doesn't even make for a great father.

It's kind of funny how not getting that Brave Axe means Lex is kind of stuck just being somewhere between kinda bad and 'eh' for the game but getting that suddenly makes him kind of good, at least for awhile.

Such an obscure but super impactful secret to get.

It doesn't, but I likely wouldn't have anyways lol. I think I'm set on Noishe for Ayra because I don't like skill proc overlap and theirs don't overlap eachother, makes me feel like I'm doing a bad job of distributing abilities when I have Astra and Luna fighting eachother for priority. Would rather have an Astra that can Crit for some hits.

Just have to baby my Cavs a bit since they aren't good in the Arena.

You'll get a weapon this chapter that can help them out in the arena, if they have the money to buy it over from Finn.

Well Finn certainly isn't having arena trouble, having cleared all 7 stages of both chapters so far, so I'll look forward to that lol.
