Because most of the teams don't matter, the regular season is chock full of filler games. Too many freethrows, refs call shooting fouls on minimal or no contact consistently. Players flopping/faking fouls is rewarded too often. Taking all the "Buy an all star team" and putting it aside, and just looking at basketball as a sport, the detractors that say "Tune in when there's two minutes left, and if either team in within 10, watch the rest. Otherwise the game is most likely already decided" kinda rings true. It's one of the few sports where the most important part of the game, and most of the drama, is in the end 95% of the time. Compared to the other "Big 4" (or Big 5 if you want to count soccer) where the most important play could arguably be at any time, basketball is usually sometime in the 4th quarter.
