Key and Peele is definitely a better show than Chappelles show. It holds up so much better
Not even close. People just like to hate on Chappelle now.

Also, no Fresh Prince and no Full House? They could have just said it was a joke list to make things easier.

Agreed

there are a lot of Chappelles show sketches that are very dated and you had to be there for. The highs everyone remembers are obviously great, but on rewatch I think Key and Peeles style which was much less focused on referencing pop culture holds up better

Parks and rec is the office with a cast that's actually good.

The office is unwatchable imo due to the cast being unlikable fuckheads.

The article touched on this, but Parks and Rec is one of those rare comedies that's genuinely funny and well-written while maintaining an upbeat tone, positive message, and likeable cast. Not only is the cast genuinely likeable, it actually took actors I previously hated / didn't care for and made them likeable.

There is so much TV, spanning so many years and genres that these lists are almost impossible to judge. I try to look at in in aggregate and honestly, while I have differences in opinion on the placement, this is a good list and it doesn't have any shows where I'm like "what are they thinking?" I can see why each show placed.
TheGoldenEel posted...
I think theres discussion to be had on whether the peaks of a show negate the bad seasons

like, objectively Game of Thrones and The Simpsons were among the best shows of all time in their respective genres for at least several seasons. Do shit seasons negate that?

arrested developments initial run absolutely deserves a place on the list; do the bad Netflix seasons mean it should be left off? I dont think so imo
The way I see it the Simpson's had at least 8 seasons of peak sitcom quality. Very few shows get to 8 seasons period and they never operate at that high of a level for that long. The fact that it eventually became mediocre doesn't undo the fact that their is an entire long-running A+ show there.

TheHoldSteady posted...
If Breaking Bad continued after 2013 for three more decades of shit would you feel bad for 87-year-old Bryan Cranston peddling meth in the nursing home cafeteria? Would it still be #3?
The advantage the Simpson's has here is it doesn't do a long-running narrative. There is no story arc that needs to be completed. If you just stop watching after season 9, you aren't losing anything. Breaking Bad as a serialized drama does have to factor being viewed as a single cohesive story experience. So it does get hurt if it can't stick the landing. Game of Thrones is a good real-life example of that. Shitty payoff does in fact make the earlier seasons less good.

I disagree. There's too many bad sketches in K&P. Chappelle rarely had a bad sketch, if any.

This. Plus, Key and Peele always went past the joke. Chappelle was much better at knowing when the joke was overstaying it's welcome. Chappelle would stop after the big laugh.

One of the problems with a list like this is there are so many different shows with different themes.

You can't really compare The Simpsons with Breaking Bad because they're so wildly different in tone and structure.

Like Jeopardy is on the list despite being a game show, and not a comedy/drama. Along with a few other talk shows. Do they really count? Sure, they have cultural impact. But I don't think most people would consider Jeopardy to be among the greatest shows ever if you asked them. Why not add Wheel of Fortune or Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Also, with the simpsons its hard to forget how big of a cultural impact the show actually had. Like it was a super critical part of TV in the 90s and changed the idea of sitcoms and animation.

The problem with The Simpsons is that its been bad-meh for 20+ years. It had about 5 years of really great work then its all downhill from there.

I mean I dislike ranking things in general, but especially something as broad as TV, so I largely agree. I still see what they are going for. Like Jeopardy is a piece of our TV landscape that is impossible to ignore so I can understand it being listed even if it in no way competes with something like Mad Men or 30 Rock.

And I guarantee there are quite a few people who will tell you that Jeopardy is their favorite TV show if you ask.

Well yeah, there's no arguing that at this point The Simpsons has only been 1/3 of an excellent series with a decade of greatness followed by 2 decades of "meh"

BUT as Compso says most shows don't even get that much.

There's also the issue of what makes a show "good".

Like, is it actually good, or did it merely have some sort of cultural significance during its initial run?

Lost and Game of Thrones are great examples of shows that look bad in retrospect, because they both had shitty payoffs. As a result, it's rather hard to go back and watch them again knowing what you're gonna get.

But the first like, 5 seasons of that show are all-time great fantasy tv. Is the destination so important that it negates the journey?

"But, TNG was a much longer-lived and a much consistently better show!"
