In comparison San Andreas was set 12 years before its release in 2004.

Vice City is set 16 years before it released. So if you play GTAIV in two years that's gonna have the same gap.

I'm playing some GTAIV (felt like some GTA after that leak) and while it's not immediately as obvious compared to 80s Miami and 90s LA there's a lot more that dates the setting playing it now than I would have remembered.

The phone is the obvious one. It's a classic brick phone. Roman brags about his fancy phone which is basically the same thing with a color screen. When you go on the internet (which you do by going into an internet cafe) one of the first websites you see is one that sells wallpapers and ringtones.

Not sure if this applies to everywhere but stopping at a toll road to pay by throwing coins into the bucket is something I remember being phased out only a couple of years after 2008 and it's in this game.

The other big thing overall is how much the news media in GTAIV is all about terrorism and the war on terror.

It's interesting that even though the GTA was set in modern time it still ends up being a time capsule of sorts.

Speaking of which I wonder if we'll ever find out what happened to Niko. I think Rockstar fell out with the actor so probably not.

Yeah Packie mentions he hasn't heard from Niko and thinks he's dead. But that's probably because Niko cut his ties with crime and went into hiding.

There's that social media page but that could just be an Easter egg.

Seems like he is still getting referenced in GTA Online now and again but more about his escaped in GTAIV. Hopefully he went to Florida.

4 is a nostalgia trip now. It makes me nostalgic for the time period in general and my own life at that time.

I think Niko retired from crime and depending on the ending SPOILERS settled down with Kate or worked with Roman at his cab company. Lester in the story mentions Niko "went quiet".

I really don't know why people want happy endings for all GTA characters. They're criminals living dangerous lives. It's unlikely and unrealistic if they all get away with it.

My headcanon has bad endings for most of them.

Vic Vance - we know killed at the beginning of Vice City

Tommy Vercetti - obvious thing here is the Forellis got revenge for Sonny. They were still around in GTA3, no one heard of a Vercetti gang

CJ - well we know how big the Leones got, and he swore to kill CJ. It's not unrealist8c he put a successful hit on him

Toni Cipriani - after Salvatore was killed the Leones fell apart. Toni either faced the wrath of the Triads, or police investigating him got him without Salvatores protection

Claude - almost everyone wanted this dude dead

Niko and on I haven't given much thought to. But prison or death is by far the most likely for all of them

hopefully GTAVI has Luis from BoGT in some capacity.

This one I doubt. The entire reason Tommy was sent to Vice City is because the mafia had no presence in the city and Forelli was looking to expand. We also know that Tommy's still in power in 1992, six years after the events of the game. The Families also hired Rosenberg, who'd recently been fired by Tommy, to oversee their casino which further indicates that they've put any beef behind them.

It's also implied that the Forelli family declined in power after losing their leader which is why Leone becomes the strongest family in SA and GTA3.

There's also things like the Stand Up Comedians in the game. Katt Williams, Ricky Gervais and Frankie Boyle all have bits in the game that they worked on prior to 2008.

Niko did bad things, but for the most part, he seemed like a genuinely good guy that actually wanted to escape his past and lead a normal life after he deals with Darko, that is.
His particular set of skills just kept getting him pulled back into the shit he was trying to escape from. The end of GTAIV pretty much implies that he's giving it all up and leading the quiet life that he's been going through hell for. And it's not like most of the major people that he killed will be missed. They were mainly leaders of failing gangs and mob families and such.

Where does that info come from? Far as I know, the only mention of Tommy in SA was by Ken during the meat factory mission. But "Just like old time, eh, Tommy?!" doesn't say anything... could be sadness of losing his friend.

In The Introduction, you see Ken trying to get in touch with Tommy, but Tommy won't take his call.

Huh. I never saw that. I never knew it was a thing.

Looks like it was just a short film that came with the PS2 version. I only ever played it on xbox.

Guess now I need to watch this.
