TikTok popularized the trend of buying books, quickly reading them, and returning them. Amazon has cracked down on that. Do you agree with Amazon?

https://lithub.com/good-news-for-authors-amazon-will-no-longer-let-people-return-ebooks-after-reading-them-in-full/

In a surprising turn of events, Amazon has done the right thing for once! In this case, the right thing is closing a loophole revealed by a TikTok about reading hacks. The hack: reading an entire ebook and then returning it, per a policy that allows readers to return ebooks within seven days of purchase, regardless of the amount read.

The (extremely) obvious problem with the hack is that it penalizes the authors of those books and not Amazon, who will not be penalized by anything short of government regulation (lol). In light of this, the Authors Guild got involved, and reported today that Amazon had agreed to restrict automatic returns to ebooks where no more than 10 percent of the book has been read. (In order to return an ebook after reading more than 10 percent, customers will have to send in a customer service requestlikely a higher barrier to entry for this low-grade scam than most people will willingly vault.)

Id like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the Libby appwhich allows you to check out ebooks from your local library and read them on your phone, tablet, or ereaderis good for authors, your bank account, and not supporting Jeff Bezos. For more reading hacks like these, follow me on TikTok! (Just kidding, Id sooner die.)

They should just punish the people abusing the returns instead of nerfing the returns entirely.

Man if only there was some thing you could do to get books every week for free. Like maybe they could have a building with a bunch of books in it and you can take anything in there you want you just have to give it back in a week and the whole thing would be free.

Wouldn't even need an account or password or anything.

Someone should work on making that happen.

Tbf, you generally do need an account to take books out of the library so they can keep track of who has them.

These days they use your Driver's license or other state id. I don't think I've seen a "library card" in forever.

I agree.

Literature is literature. If you're reading on a physical book and it works for you, great. If you're more of an e-reader person, then that's great too.

What's important is that you're reading something.

By requesting a refund. Basically they were buying a digital book, reading the book within a week, and then requesting a full refund.

Why not just offer rental books digitally like a library? Amazon already does it for movies, you get 30 days to start it, then 48 hours to finish watching once you start.

They do have that. It's called Kindle unlimited.

There's also a feature called Kindle Lending Library which is part of Amazon prime. It has a more narrow selection than Kindle unlimited but it's included for free if you're already paying for prime.

Percentage based or a set amount of time, whatever is longer. If its a video game it doesnt make sense to block refunds after playing for 10 minutes because youve already beaten 60% of the game. Its easier to apply this rule for books since you know how many pages the book is before you buy it

Because the average person, or "normies" as we here in the online nerd culture have called them since at least the late 2000s, has not ever known how to pirate and will not ever know how to pirate.

In comparison to just pirating their novel, does a refund hurt them more? I would assume the payment gets reversed but apart from that they arent out any money. Yeah it sucks that they had the money in the bank and its taken away, but they should consider these as sales they never had in the first place
