They have introduced lovecraftian themes into the history of the land that Gotham is built on. I think it was revealed that the land is cursed and i believe some entity is sleeping under the city ... Copied to Clipboard!

It gives the plot some backbone and the idea of a Lovecraftian superhero on the down low who goes toe to toe with gods and has ninja training is really interesting.
