it didn't really feel like preceding 3d marios. For one it didn't have a lasting impression. While levels were designed well, it wasn't like other mario games where repeated visits to a level change the level in subtle ways; kinda like the world is evolving alongside you. The kirby gimmick where mario absorbs powers is neat, but because there were so many, a lot of them just came and went

in addition, it also felt more like a collection of mini games or mini puzzles. Almost every few steps mario takes is another opportunity to find a moon unique to that location. It could be a puzzle, defeating enemies, whatever, but there would be a moon. I never got that sense of accomplishment when completing a complex and lengthy level

wasn't memorable to me. I don't remember many of the powerups, bosses, worlds, etc.

I had my fun with it and enjoy it for what it did, but I dont want to see 3D Mario in this direction for good. I cant be bothered to get all 999 power moons though, 120 was plenty in the first 3 games

I enjoyed it, but it had far too many moons to collect. Especially since there was a bunch that took like 0 effort to have to get.

Those wii u graphics get really noticeable. They just reuse assets and theres 4 jungle type levels. Not at their best for level design.

I like it. I skipped the wii all together, but i've played everything else. Odyssey was better than mario64 in a lot of ways, but it wasn't better as a whole. It's in the top 5 mario games of all time. I really like mario and have a discriminating eye, so I feel my statement here pretty much covers the question entirely.

I liked it, but I wish it had more.. direction.

I liked galaxy 1 and 2 and sunshine more

I wish theyd make a 3D Mario like 64 but bigger.

Wish the moons were reobtainable, makes grinding for outfits pointless

Great but I liked the previous 3D Mario more. I think there's a bit of an inherent problem with open-worldness compared to more linear levels. The open worldedness gives an amazing wow factor and a greater sense of exploration on the first playthrough but it makes the overall level less memorable and becomes a slog on repeat playthroughs. Whereas linear levels that focus on making each individual level have an interesting aspect about it is more memorable to me and more enjoyable on repeat playthroughs.

Hat in Time was a great example of that as well. Short and sweet levels that left a lasting impression and still fun to romp in again on repeat playthroughs.
