That's why we need guys like Shad and other fellow Sword Enthusiasts & Masters to push the boundary of realism in Sword Fighting in Hollywood.

We need to end the bad tropes and get rid of bad Swordsmanship on screen.

So what if one sword fight only lasts a few seconds.

Isn't that why the bad guy sends wave after wave of mooks to tire out the protagonist?

I'd rather see competent swordsmanship and hordes of enemies getting skewered, slashed, impaled properly then what we're seeing on screen here in the LotR Prequel.

Hell, the old Highlander TV show in the 90's had better Swordsmanship.

Hell, Xena Warrior Princess had better Swordsmanship than this.

And Xena wasn't all that great at Swordsmanship compared to good portrayals of Swordsmanship.

Yeah unfortunately realism in melee doesn't have enough flare to entertain an audience. Quite often it's two people staring at each other, possibly circling, making small adjustments to their guard position. One person commits to an attack or feint, the other person is either quick enough to counter in a way that gives them an opening and bam that's it, or isn't if they aren't quick enough. Or as I've witnessed in a ton of exchanges both parties take blows, one of which is probably immediately (or close enough as to not matter) fatal and the other is maimed or injured severely enough to need immediate medical attention or die.

The spacing and the speed at which things happen make any exchange extremely dangerous for both people.

@Kamen_Rider_Blade
Honestly the 90's highlander show had ok swordsmanship. People at least fought accurately for the weapons they were using. Or in the case of Macleod they specifically show him over the previous 200 years of his life learning multiple styles and adapting them to his weapon of choice at the time. Though there is a scene where he is training Richie (his fledgling immortal) with a katana with clear katana specific movements and then gives him a Scottish Broadsword as his first sword, which made me laugh and think "is he trying to get the guy killed". Also, I met the guy plays Duncan Macleod, Adrian Paul, he was a really fucking cool dude, very skilled martial artist though he's actually Hung Gar Kung Fu guy, not a Batto guy like I had imagined he would be.

It still kills me how holding the sword by bladed part was a technique they used to hit with the blunt part of the handle.

What purpose does the indented cuts on the back of the blade serve?

Why are there lots of little holes through the blade on the spine?

Why is the hilt shaped the way it does with 2x prongs?

To make it look bad ass.

Careful we don't get too snobby. I look at most swords n shit in media and think "wow that's so stupid looking and would injure the user" with thorns everywhere on it n shit

Most people think that sort of thing looks cool. And it still can to us as well; but we want to draw people into seeing this as we do and to spread the truth about how these things were and how they were used, we don't wanna make someone think they're dumb for liking the look of something

I'm not saying you're doing that btw, but there are a lot of people that do. It can be alienating when someone says shit like "Conan's sword is the dumbest looking shit only idiots that know nothing about swords would like something like that"

For real though I'm not saying you're acting like that. I feel I'm coming off like it and I want to reinforce that I'm trying not to

Conan's sword is kind of ok though. Let's say squalls gunblade

It's not functionally bad for a Tactical Machete, but I would like to know why they implemented some of the features it has, like the 2 pronged hilt, the cuts on the spine.

If you can explain it's functionality, than I'm cool with it.

But for the sake of "Cool Factor", then it becomes kind of goofy & silly.

Usually, you have a reason for putting in everything.

@PrettyBoyFloyd can you tell me who made this Machete?

The manufacturer can probably explain it.

From everything I've seen, it seems to be a $30 machete.

At that price, I'm not having much faith in the Steel Quality.

And no details come up about the blade.

Prongs at the bottom, no clue

Never underestimate the "cool factor." If it catches someone's eye that's generally what they want whether it's functional or not

Then it seems to be based off of "Cool Factor", then that seems to be the only reason I can think of myself as well.

Sad but many decisions are based on such thinking.

I concur, construction methods, materials for a blade need to be transparent along with forging process and any other easily verifiable technical stat should be made available to the consumer.

When I was a teen I bought a shamshir looking thing from a pawn shop. It was rattling and felt like it would fall apart, while also being like 15 lbs despite being a normal ass sized sword. Idk wtf was going on with it

Hell I still have a cheap $100 Katana I bought in 2001.

Changed the handle out and took the tsuba off and wrapped it up like Buddy's from Six String Samurai.

It was as sharp as a butter knife after about 15 years of hacking and beating random shit up.

Took various grades of files and put a edge back on it a few years ago.

Not razor sharp but it has a edge again.

It's the same one that I knocked a ceiling fan blade off when fooling around with it.
