"They" in this case is a singular person. I'm going with "is"

"They is" wouldn't be correct in any written English. 3rd person singular and 3rd person plural behave the same in English. Quantity is inferred. English already has a lot of existing tools for non-binary.

If you have a room full of non-binary folks, you might want to say "all of their/theirs/them/-selves".

It would still be "are." Same situation as if I were talking to a single person and said "hey are you still coming over later?"

Maybe you distinguish them/theirself vs them/theirselves for singular.

Why are people comparing "they" to "you" when it's more like "he" and she"? You wouldn't say "he are" or "she are".

Even if singular, the verb is still plural. A reminder of English's rather bad journey.

Because like you, they is a pronoun that can be used to replace either singular or plural nouns. He and She are not.

You already know the answer. If youre talking about someone whose gender you dont know, you would use are.

Ex. Someone ran right into that pole with their car.
Damn I wonder if theyre okay.

They are. Not they is. Its the same when using they as a nonbinary pronoun.

there is no such thing as "proper grammar"

is your sentence ungrammatical, in a linguistic sense? no.

edit: it sounds better to say "they are" for sure, but again just emphasizing that grammar is not just the way rich white people talk.

they is be coming over later

"they be coming over later" makes no sense. you only use "be" if the action is habitual: "they be going to the gym"

you could also say "they coming over later" and it sounds fine. "they are" and "they is" are both grammatical as well, just different dialects.

to be "ungrammatical" a sentence has to basically be something like:

"The to man walk store the."

that's an ungrammatical sentence.

"They is over later coming" is also ungrammatical.
