I think the Japanese Ningyo is the most interesting, because eating their flesh grants immortality. It'd certainly liven up The Little Mermaid if the subplot had the King trying to eat a real Mermaid to gain immortality. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Japan has already made this, the story has been slightly altered to be more modern, and better for Japanese sensibilities: An artist finds and rescues a mermaid in a sewer. He takes her home with him and she develops sores all over her body that begin to pustulate and bleed. He uses what oozes from her sores to paint her portrait.
