TNO - Gets straight to the action, manages to tell an interesting story without making you wait, makes you feel overpowered without the game being easy.

TNC - You're weak as hell for 80% of the game, the story segments go on and on, the hub world (ship) is poorly designed and difficult to navigate. Too much senseless dialogue.

TNC is still a really good game, but not for any of the reasons that TNO was. TNO basically spearheaded the trend back to 90s style FPS game play (that Doom 2016 perfected in some ways) so it's kind of weird that they decided to abandon some of it with the sequel.

I wasn't a big fan of the hub world in either game, to me it just brought the games to a screeching halt while you walk around and look for collectibles. One think I did really like about TNC was how revisiting levels would give you new objectives, and a lot of them were visually different to take into account whatever story stuff happened there. Like when you go back to BJ's childhood home and it's all fixed up and has been turned into a film set.

Yeah that was pretty cool. I guess my biggest complaint with TNC is that it took way too long to get going properly.

TNO also had some friction between story and gameplay but not at that extent of the sequel which is a bummer because gameplay alone is a 10/10. There just wasn't enough of it.

I disagree. You can skip most of the dialogue and usually you can go straight to your objective in the sub. I also dont recall feeing weak.

TNO had you shooting Nazis on the moon. And it made no attempts to make that less silly than it was.

I actually called that plot twist way ahead (lol) of time when I saw the body in the tank of water in Set's lab.

TNO managed to balance seriousness and humor. TNC leans too much on humor.

Doom 2016 doesnt play like a 90s fps in any way beyond being kind of fast. tno is slightly closer if you take out all the story stuff I guess but not by much

I love both of them. And I still wish they could make a third. But Young blood or whatever the hell it was called probably fucked up that chance.
