there's a lot of information they need to learn, I guess.

I know a dude who was in an expedited program, though, that was three years instead of four, and he said the workload was crazy.

In order to learn the appropriate amount of science to actually properly practice medicine, 4 years is about as quick as it reasonably can be.

Honestly no, because of what they need to know.

but I think they shouldnt be so much in debt that it takes 20 years to pay off

The issue IIRC isn't the time spent in medical school, it is the time spent just to be able to get into it.

I have nothing but respect for mid-levels, but if there's one huge differentiating factor between them and physicians, it's the deeper understanding of physiology, biochemistry, etc.

from what I understand, it's four years of college, four years of med school, and then maybe two or three years of residency

edit: Google says 3-7 years of residency

What do people mean by "pre-med"? I've heard the term be used before.

No.

Stop trying to shorten and dumb down education. US education is becoming a joke as is.

Doctors need to learn a lot. So do lawyers.

It's already being done.

It is called PA and NP school. They have online degrees now which give them independence to practice straight out of school. No need for residency training.

They call themselves doctors and wear long white coat too. It's great, the peak of american healthcare.

Generally they can prescribe everything but controlled substances like benzodiazepines, narcotics, etc.
Surgery - generally no, unless you count basic procedures to be surgery.

PAs can sometimes practice surgery under the supervision of a surgeon.
