Apparently this was how Iraq was in the 70s. Compare that to now. Do conservatives want such a drastic change in North America? But with christianity instead? Is that their end goal?

The middle east is loaded with oil money and that has probably influenced their politics. I think if you remove the flow of a high demand resource then there probably isn't going to be the same system.

I just don't think it makes sense to compare the ME to America's trajectory. If you are going to compare the two you need to include a secular state that has a majority religion.

Basically I think America will never be controlled by theologians so it's not the same thing at all.

The former. That extraction economies create a power disparity based off of money that allows dictatorships, and that dictatorships often use religion to create scapegoats (i.e. women, LGBT, etc).

That's the thing, the situation in the middle east is what happens when conservatives take over. The US knows how effective religious zealots are (they will literally give up their life for their cause) and so the US has spent and continues to spend a lot of money and provide a lot of support to such groups (you know, "to protect our interests"). Conservatism has common themes around the world. Conservatives will claim that they're for personal freedoms and individualism, but they mean their personal freedom to enforce their individual beliefs on everyone else.
