They mostly seem like a thing of the past but see complaints about it still happening. Thankfgully none of the games I've played in the past few years have made this mistake. I remember FFX2 allowed you to skip them but it still punished you by missing completion points if you skipped them >_>

First time around it's fine, and I wouldn't want to skip them anyway.

But fuck any game that doesn't let you skip them on repeat playthroughs/retries - and especially fuck any game that has an unskippable cutscene nestled in between a checkpoint and a tricky boss battle.

The only exception really is games like Until Dawn/Heavy Rain and so on, where the cutscenes are kinda the whole point. It would be a pretty terrible experience to sit there just going "skip cutscene, QTE, QTE, skip cutscene, skip cutscene, walk, skip cutscene, QTE, skip cutscene..."

Unskippable cutscenes suck, as do skippable ones that simply skip the instant you hit start or whatever instead of pausing and giving you the option to skip.

i remember star ocean 3 frustrated me immensely because it had two settings, one where you could not skip cutscenes and one where if any button on the controller got touched at all it would immediately skip the cutscene. im glad most games have a middle ground now where it asks to confirm

Yeah, fuck those developers that skip instead of pause. I just wanted to grab a quick drink, not reload a save from 20 minutes ago to watch what will turn out to be a 2 minute scene.

Most interesting one I ever saw was in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. You didn't skip it, but it ran at like 10x speed. Was kind of nice, since it set up your new position when the boss battle resurmed.
