Lost Odyssey has me convinced that jrpg fans don't actually care about the quality of a story, they just want to play as plucky little kids defeating an evil pope or something.

We're talking about a game made by final fantasy veterans, with an actual turn-based battle system that still includes an active element, with classic open world exploration, a cast of characters that involves adults dealing with real world adult problems, and a unique twist around immortals that hadn't been used in a prior game. As a complete package it should have been a smash hit, and I can't help but feel like if the game was called final fantasy and not Lost Odyssey people would be holding it up as one of the best examples in the genre.

The Series already boosts its performance. You are asking for a waste of time and resources.

Honestly, I'm willing to bet a lot of that has to do with more grounded storytelling. Having an entire chapter dedicated to having an immortal character who recently regained his memories visit one of his mortal children to find that, not only has so much time passed that she has grandchildren now, but also that she's dying, in the end forcing you to bury your own child in a solemn ceremony where the player can really feel the pain of living long enough to see the people you care about get old and die... I won't hold it against a lot of people for picking the story instead where you're the upbeat blue haired kid with a sword that has to stop the end of the world by riding a dragon into space to fight robot Mecha devil Pope or something.

I don't think that Lost Odyssey is boring. I just think it deals with a lot of adult themes that people either can't connect with or aren't interested in dealing with compared to some of the more fantastical alternatives in the genre.

The one part I remember is when the MC tells them to stop building Grand Staff because it makes Gongora stronger, and the politician dude or whoever is like NO WE NEED MORE Grand Staves to counter him!

I remember just staring and going ????

The battles WERE complicated, you definitely needed to slot in the right skills and have the right debuffs and buffs. That's too complicated for the average JRPG fan though.

As opposed to other JRPGs of the time where every boss is super easy? Ozma from FFIX was sort of difficult as an optional boss for the first time, and the SMT games have some difficulty, but JRPGs aren't exactly difficult.

When LO came out, a lot of people complained that the early game was too hard. It was a common complaint on the forums and it even still is for people just picking it up. I agree that later on it's pretty easy though.

There's lots of difficult JRPGs. FF13 hunts were pretty hard and it was on the same system. Admittedly it's all optional content but it's a lot of it not just one boss.

To be fair, if we are including optional content than Lost Odyssey has a 100 floor optional end game dungeon with a significant number of insta kill type effects on the upper floors that require you to treat every fight like a boss battle in order to survive.

I laughed at how every dream story went.

I sat there in silence at a table in the corner of the bar. You could hear the heavy rain coming down from outside, the sound of strong wind batting against the walls and thunder rumbling above. A few others were huddled in the bar seeking shelter from the storm, a couple seemingly just wed, a priest, and a large man seven drinks deep. The large man turned and looked at me, his brow furrowed and he squinted with intensity, and then a smile washed over his face.

"Kaim?", the man exclaimed as he got up from his chair and began to hurriedly make his way towards me,"Why if it isn't my old frie- *hurgh*", he said before he rolled his ankle and died. His body laid there until the storm passed, I didn't recognize him and now will never know who he was. Shit was sad.

Kaim

One beautiful autumn afternoon I stopped to pee next to an old oak. I gazed about the area spotting, a family of quail, a squirrel feverishly storing nuts for the coming winter, and an old man. The old man watched me pee for a time, before he waddled over. He began to excitedly regail me with tales of a life well lived. He then stopped, and looked down. My pee had formed a rather large puddle at our feet. The man looked back up with a sparkle in his eye, and told me of the last thirty years of his life. How he had met a beautiful woman, gotten married, and settled down in the forest. He told me that his wife took ill, and no medicine would help. He shed a tear after telling me she died.

"Why are you telling me this?", I asked, pondering if I had met this man before in my long life.

"Cause that's her grave yer pissin' on you bastard!", he exclaimed as he brought a knife forward with his left hand. I caught it easily, without disturbing my stream of urine, and tossed the knife aside. The old man's eyes bulged and his right hand grasped his chest tightly before he collapsed into the puddle. A heart attack. Shit was sad.

Idk, I haven't found a single FF boss difficult since Ozma. Penance from FFX probably would have been hard if I went in blind though.

And yeah, if we're including optional content LO has much harder stuff imo.
