I wish I could be happier and more open about my interests but I just don't have it in me. I feel like it's partly due to being constantly mocked and belittled throughout my childhood and teenage years.

I mean... It's a role-playing game... I do voices for all my characters too... Both as a DM and a Player... That's part of the fun...

Well to try and help you TC, what kind of nerdy things do you like? Like i know for me i like to talk about sports in a nerdy manner even though sports by itself isn't really seen as a nerdy activity, but there's a lot of nerds that love discussing the numbers behind a player stats and shit. Yeah, this comment particularly bothers me. I am 45, have kids, have a high salary career, and I still will use voices. It is called being secure with yourself, having fun, and not giving a fuck.

The problem is obviously with me, but it's hard to really treat. Like I mentioned, I think it's in part due to being made fun of for my interests. My last relationship with an abusive woman with BPD didn't help either, as she'd constantly make fun of me and belittle me.

It doesn't help that almost every "nerd" I've known throughout my life was pretty insufferable and annoying.

i was with you at first, TC, but acting as a character is exactly what D&D is about.
the best ones are amateur improv theater, that's the whole point

I get that and I feel for ya. But you need to change your statements then. Instead of saying "Other nerds make enjoying nerdy things pretty embarrassing", maybe say "how can I let go and be nerdy without feeling embarrassed?". Big difference.

TC has constantly stated that he sees no point in doing anything if it doesn't make you any money.

The problem is definitely with him, and he needs to learn to just enjoy things for the sake of enjoyment and lighten up.

The part that causes my sympathy for him to repeatedly evaporate, is when you tell him this, he'll tell you he "doesn't see the point in that" or something to that effect.

Anytime someone tells you to make any sort of attempt at self improvement no matter how small or insignificant you pivot to "but there's no point without insurance or mental healthcare".
