The James Web Telescope is on a Lagrange Point thats on the opposite side of the sun so it would be a sausage eclipse that would blind you.

This wasn't my take I am asking this user if this is the lesson they implied.

I dunno I can sort of understand it in these circumstances? not only is it coming from someone in a position who should not be lying about things in the first place, it's also a particular sort of information that is essentially fully concentrated in a select few group of people. it's not really something that can easily be independently verified by your average person

how certain are you that no other images shown from this telescope so far are fake, and why?

Professionalism is probably pretty bad for communication and equity in science outreach, tbh.

I think the fact that scientists feel comfortable to make jokes and discuss their work conversationally on twitter is a good thing. Could be better, but appealing to stuffy professionalism isn't the right call.

I think it's fair to point out that if a person were told this was a picture of a star they would agree. Not because they are gullible, but because it does look closely enough to a picture of the sun with a different color scheme than normal and an astronomer is backing up the claim.
Not only that, but how would you even research this to discover it isn't chorizo? You would have absolutely no reason to think "This isn't a star, I bet it's sausage, I'll get to the bottom of this and find out what kind!"
This reminds me of the infamous 1=0 meme in math. A person will see a bunch of math that seems reasonable, to the point that 1=0, only to find out it isn't possible because you can't manipulate numbers in this particular way in a divergent series. (math people, if I explained it wrong or you can do better let me know)

Because people can't and don't want to engage with text that reads like a terms of service agreement. And generally dislike stuffy authority figures.

Irreverant joking is certainly a part of what happens when you break down the professionalism wall. Like, I haven't been in a lab that doesn't joke like this, but it's not like that's seen by the public.

Jokes, as we know, are most funny when they are pointed out.

Come on now, this is so innocent and probably immediately clear if you were to just look into the thread.

The fact that people are upset is just an underlying insecurity about feeling dumb. But like, no need to feel dumb. This picture of a slice of chorizo is pretty beautiful too. Completely reasonable to feel awe when looking deep into its spicy meaty delicious insides.

And then what's the harm? Somebody goes around thinking a circular red object was a planet. What possible harm comes from that?

The complaints only happen after people, in fact, find out that it was a little joke. Because it's not an issue of spreading misinformation, but an issue of people feeling embarassed.

Because you described discussion of a twitter joke as "a hill to die on" as if this discussion was making me look terrible. Sounds like you are elevating the seriousness of the discussion lol.
