I'm just grinding in the thunder plains right now after having not played this game for 10+ years, and I just never find myself in a fight thinking oh, now's a good time for Kimahri. What is he for?

Nothing, actually. Jack of all trades, master of none. Archetype doesn't work out well in games like FFX.

I hated having to use Wakka for flying enemies because I thought a blitzball was a bad weapon..

So, just because something is useful it doesn't always make it better

Where everyone else gets their own dedicated spot of the sphere grid to level through and mostly increase stats recommended for their play style (Tidus as damage dealer, Lulu for black magic, Auron as a "tank"/damage dealer, Yuna for white magic and summoning, etc) Kimahri doesn't.

His position on the sphere grid involves you directing him into any of the other character's paths. Because of this, you can essentially make him whatever you want (he's essentially a blue mage). But also, he's not going to be as good as the other party members that already fulfil that role. So in regards to the battle system, he's just kind of there and the odd one out.

They learn enemy abilities to use in combat.

Kimahri is the worst one int he entire franchise.

I always beeline him to Steal, and get it before Rikku joins the party. Lot of nifty items you can steal early on, like petrify grenades on the highroad

You could then have him go for Holy and have him become a magic nuke, but I don't care enough to do so

I always go for the rikki route. It gives some good strength for the middle of the game, since she has some 4+ strength spheres at the beginning and it doesn't hurt having someone else who can steal.

Oh his gimmick is stealing abilities from other enemies? Wtf? I use Lancet all the time and get nothing out of it except a little over 100 HP, which is less than enemy attacks.

Blue magic is really bad in FFX and the fact it's locked behind his overdrive makes it even worse. Early mighty guard is his only real use.

Not really.

If you use the Expert Sphere Grid he can learn bribe early and you can bribe the Lord Ochu Boss in Kilika for a bunch of Remedies.

However there's no real benefit to doing that.

A blue mage can steal abilities from enemies. Kimarhi learns his overdrives by doing lancet on enemies

He's there to be open for the player to make him into whatever job role they want, but the the flaw is that means he will always be behind everyone else.

Want him to be a white mage? He'll be worse than Yuna, Black mage? Worse than Lulu. Accurate? He'll be worse than WAkka and no long range weapon. Thief? He'll be slower than Rikku.

And his overdrives are all lame.

They dropped the ball on him

The only decent use I found for him was taking him down Rikku's path (which is way easier on the Expert grid) and using him for Steal and Use in the early game. Eventually Rikku just completely outclasses him though due to Mix being a much more useful Overdrive and he just sits on the sidelines the rest of the game.

Early is a relative term, I guess. Also I forgot he does have a real "niche" of allowing you to steal level 3 key spheres from his solo boss fights.

The other characters have their destiny laid out for them. They will always be what they were foreordained to be, bit actors following the same paths in the same doomed pilgrimage. Kimahri is the outcast, a broken-horned Ronso out of place in the group. He's cast aside any place in the world to offer his love and support to a lonely little girl who needed a friend after her hero dad had to leave. What he becomes is up to you. It doesn't come easily to him, in fact he has to work harder than any other character to get there. He doesn't have a neat path to follow, so he makes his own. Becoming whatever he needs to be to help out, and to keep Yuna alive and free to cherish the memories she makes along the way. Kimahri mighty Ronso.

"Is there any use for Kimahri in FFX"

No. He's pretty much useless no matter what you do with him, and since blue magic is tied to his Overdrive his only real use goes out the window.

I really dont know what they were thinking with him. We really went from Enemy materia in 7, to Quistis in 8, to Quina in 9, and then Kimhari in 10. What a massive letdown

Put him down Rikku's path for early Steal/Use and some extra HP. Then go to Yuna's path. I don't remember if he gets to Reflect before Yuna, but Reflect is useful for a certain boss battle and I think he can have it by then.

Then finish off Kimahri in Yuna's grid. Yuna's grid has a lot of Magic stats and Kimahri's breath attacks are based on his magic stat. He'll OHKO most random encounters with his Blue Magic if you do this build.

I did a Kimahri solo character challenge and it was lots of fun. You get to use lots of blue magic that way with Loner overdrive mode.

EDIT: Forgot mention credit to whoever wrote the Kimahri SCC guide. That's where I got this build from.

This sounds interesting but it's still too much effort when most normal fights are fairly easy anyway. And solo challenges don't really count, he still sucks Ronso balls as a whole.

I did forget about the Lv 3 Key Spheres in his one solo fight in the story. Give him Steal for that purpose, steal a bunch and then bench him again for the rest of the game. You don't even need to level him up for that fight since the enemies in that fight scale to your stats.
