When does middle age begin?

At what point are you considered middle aged?

I would say roughly 35-40ish.

Granted it depends on the person and how gracefully they age. But considering most people only live to their 70s and 80s, 35-40 seems like the average.

This. People who even live to their 70s these days are fortunate. Alot of people die in their late 40s, 50s and 60s.

A person's "Middle-Age" is a moving target & since you can't figure out the person's "Middle-Age" until they eventually die.

Then you'll know their TRUE Middle age by doing the math and figuring out when was their "Middle-Age" by figuring out what the half way point in their life was.

Middle age is a mindset, not a number.

It is age related, but people can stave it off with a mostly healthy diet, regular exercise and good life decisions such as avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption.

Middle age means you're in that in-between phase of your life where you are not old but you are not young either.

It has less to do with how old a person is and more to do with changes in their outlook. Middle age general occurs when a person starts looking forward to things less, and instead spends more time regretting past major decisions (partners, career paths) and/or thinking about their end of life. This onset of pessimism and regret often begets what is commonly referred to as the "mid-life crisis" where a person does something rash in an effort to drastically alter their life trajectory.

For most people, this happens after they've done some real adult living.

We call it "middle age", but it's not necessarily mid-life for each individual.
For people who like to pick fights and ignore warnings, their mid-life could be 20...they just don't know it yet.

I've always thought of it starting at 35 but I turn 34 in a couple months so I'm going to move the goalposts and say 40.

Really though I think it'd be fair to consider it to be the midpoint of your working life. Which would be 43-45ish. I imagine a lot of people start to question their choices at that point and wonder "am I going to do this for the rest of my life?"

This was my rough thinking, but there something I don't like about life stages lasting 20+ years. In my mind, you don't go from middle age straight to retirement, but I don't think there's a common term for that phase of life.
