Sonic 3D Blast for the Sega Genesis.

I must have been 6 or 7. Was extremely pumped for my dude Sonic IN THREEE DEEEE!

Got it probably for my birthday and played hours of it. Just...terrible. First thing that ever taught me what disappointment was I think.

Home Alone 2 on NES was the first time as a kid I became conscious of the idea of a "bad" game. Whenever I rented a game from Blockbuster it didn't matter what it was I'd play it the whole weekend. With that one? I just went back to Mario.

There were plenty of NES games that were god awful. You never knew what you were going to get.

The first game I remember being hyped for pre release and let down by was Yoshis Story. I still played it a ton but felt it wasnt up to the standard of Yoshis Island or other first party N64 games.

One of the Zelda Oracle games on Gameboy. Not that the games were bad in hindsight. But I was too young to actually read or solve puzzles so I never got past the first area. I remember hating it so Mum returned it for a Mario game.

Yoshi's Story. I had a choice between that and Diddy Kong Racing. And I beat Yoshi's Story in 1 sitting. I was so pissed at how short it was >_> Even going back and trying to beat all the levels wasn't satisfying at all.

Yoshi's Story is a good choice. When I was young, Ninty was the only company I expected excellence out of, and I think that was their first 1st-party game that let me down enough to cause genuine disappointment (as an aside, the Super Mario Bros. movie was my first big childhood taste of disappointment in regards to the media I consumed, nothing at the time compared to that).

Chrono Cross too, maybe? I liked CC for what it was and loved parts of it, but that was my first big taste of RPG / story-driven sequels not living up to the original.

probably Dragon Age 2.

I didn't really look forward to upcoming games when I was younger, but if I did, I generally ended up having a good time with them.

but with how good Bioware games had been up to that point, from my experience, Dragon Age 2 ended up just being really bad, for me.

Shining Force: Sword of Hajya on Sega GameGear. I watched like 5 minutes of the opening story scenes and was convinced it was just watching a story and there was no actual game. I wasnt familiar with RPGs or games with substantial stories. I tried it again a year later and found out there was actual gameplay, and it became one of my favorite games.

Yeah I think that was part of the reason I never felt truly disappointed by a NES game. Even at 5 my expectations were in check and besides, I always rented, never bought. So if a game sucked, whatever. Still play it for the weekend cause I'm a dumb kid and then try my luck next time.

This.

Yoshi's Story was such a massive step back from Yoshi's Island, and the Yoshi series never really recovered from it (except for Woolly World).

Regarding Yoshi Story, I'm not going to defend its flaws, but you're supposed to beat the game multiple times, because every playthrough you only get to play one level in each world.

There are four levels per world, so that would mean four different playthroughs going through four different levels per world each time as a minimum.

I honestly can't remember the first game that dispointed me, though. It mustn't have been that bad since I can't recall, lol.

Im scratching my head how so many people dont realize theres 24 levels, not 6. Do they not find any big hearts? When you start a game you literally have to pick between the 4 different starting levels. Plus every level has branching paths and a few different things to uncover.

I played Yoshis Island for the first time this year and was disappointed. Its braindead easy if youre not going for 100% completion, and tedious and boring if youre going for 100% to unlock the secret levels. Yoshis Story has more interesting gameplay with more varied levels, and it controls better.
