Ash took 3 pokemon that he NEVER TRAINED or battled with to a fucking league tournament and expected to win. He expected to beat trainers that were using the same team and training each of them from day 1. His Krabby evolved DURING a match. He was using a level 28 'mon against level 55+ opponents. Ash was trash.

I wish krabby had been used more often

Ash had a few impressive moments throughout S1 but most of the season is him bumbling around showing what a dumbass he is, and how uneducated he is on Pokemon. The fact that he didn't bring those Pokemon in and really train them prior to the League battles just shows how naive he was.

Several of his gym badges were won by cop outs FFS

Besides sleep status somehow being counted as 'knocked out'(Guess a Parasect would solo Kanto League), Ash gets disqualified because Charizard refused to battle Sparky... but Sparky never attacked Charizard either. Just freaking T-bolt him. If Charizard still refuse then DQ him.

That said, he was too inexperienced to command Charizard. Had he been a better trainer maybe that wouldn't have happened

Different part of the show but why did Koga wait until a gym battle to tell his Venonat to evolve into Venomoth? Wouldn't it be at an immediate disadvantage going from being a big round ground-based thing to being a slimmer thing with wings and being flung into a fight so suddenly?

Yea, that was pretty frustrating the writers couldn't have just given Ash a honest L there. It could have still ended the same way it did as well.

I'm just glad they wised up afterwards and kept them as far away as possible during leagues from then on. But as bad as that was, it's still probably his 3rd or 4th worst league loss.

Worst League Loss will always be Tobias in my eyes.

Some random, broody, OC looking asshole with a Darkrai shows up. He's so perfect he swept everyone else with just Darkrai. Ash faces him, Darkrai bodies half his team. Ash FINALLY manages to take Darkrai out...

And then he casually throws out a Latios and beats the rest of this team (Even if Pikachu took him down with him). Tobias then goes on to win the league, with no one else beating his Darkrai.

Like fuck man. That was like a small game shop hosting a kids Pokemon tournament where most of the contestants are using unoptimized Pokes they like(With maybe some help from an older sibling), and then one grown ass dude signs up with flawless IV legendaries with movesets taken off Smogon.

A big problem with the anime as someone whos been watching since essentially day one is that a lot of choices made are based on the reactions that 10 year old Japanese children have.

Remember how at the beginning of the G/S/C arc how Ash had Charizard with him and absolutely diddy bopped Casey and was a huge braggart? That was extremely unpopular with the Japanese audience since they thought it made Ash seem like a bully.

Thats why the whole team replacement besides Pikachu was a thing for so many years.

Its why the anime is still massive in Japan, but had slowed down by the time R/S/E dropped in North America. Nobody here liked the team replacement thing, but kids here didnt get a say. The kids in Japan do.

Or another example is Jigglypuff. Most people here found the Jigglypuff character to be annoying, but she was huge in Japan.
