I started a second PT job working at a womens group home for individuals with mental illness and/or substance abuse problems.
One of the girls is the sweetest person but due to her MI she makes terrible decisions and doesn't remember basic safety rules. We literally have to tell her every time she leaves "OK Alice (not her name), remember don't get in anyone's car, knock on doors, or go with anyone you don't know" and she's like "OK ". She will think random people are her husband and ofc some sick people take advantage of that. She also does meth sporadically so that doesn't help anything and there's a meth house literally one house down and one house over. She has disappeared before and will be spotted on the highway or one time she was found in a cornfield she slept in because she "wanted to see what it was like (she was high)".
Well I go in for my shift this morning and she's gone. She left yesterday, came back around midnight wanting her meds and we refused them to her because she was clearly intoxicated and protocol is we don't administer if we suspect they're high/drunk, we offer to take them to the hospital for a toxicology or they can fess up to what they're on. Can't risk a negative drug interaction. That pissed her off and she left (they have choice, we can only advise) and hasn't been home since. I'm super worried about her and the worst part is that she could be literally 100ft away from me at that fucking drug house and there's nothing I can do. I even knocked and asked if she's there and was told no but honesty they wouldn't tell me if she was. She goes over there and they'll basically use her for sex and keep her high and it pisses me off so much CE. She will literally do whatever you tell her to do and she asks permission to do anything, so somebody broke her long ago and she's going to get hurt someday.

It really fucking sucks caring about people sometimes. I've gotten less than 2 hours sleep because I'm worried about her and keep looking out the doors and windows to see if I spot her walking around.

Honestly you need to worry about yourself because theres an infinite number of people in the world who need help and you cant possibly be Superman and save the day for everyone.

The best thing that you can do for the world is to make sure that youre in the best position that you can possibly be in order to help the people that you love.

Look at the situation; youre only going to get two hours of sleep because of something that is completely out of your control. Its hurting you to worry about something that cannot be changed by any action that you take. Stop doing this.

drug use is a choice that you can't make for someone else

at some point it's better to cut your losses and help the people that want it, rather than the ones that don't

This is true, but I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I no longer need to make a ton of money at my 9-5 so I do things that make a difference and make me feel good (I'm also the state director for a CRP, we help disabled people find and maintain work).
Nobody can help everybody but I like to think what I do makes a difference to someone no matter how small.

And she's back! We'll have to talk about her choices last night but she did disclose she was drinking so going to have to address that and get her to a meeting asap. Had to remind her to drink water and get something in her stomach (because meds) but she says she's OK and not hurt so after she sleeps we'll dig a little deeper.

Job doesn't work that way. You're right we can't make them do anything, but this one does genuinely want to get healthy so cutting my losses isn't an option. Wouldn't be even if she didn't want help, my job is to make sure she's safe and offer any supports I can.

Jesus, well I'm very glad she got clean and is doing well now. Thank you for helping her and not writing her off like a lot of folks do

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little curious myself.

Thanks. It is hard sometimes and holy shit can these girls stress me out, but they're a lot of fun and it's super rewarding helping them achieve goals and stay on the right path so it is worth it. Our newest resident is 18 and was living with her abusive mom. Every day I see her it puts a huge smile on my face watching her just enjoy the fuck out of her independence and learning how to take care of herself.

Yeah, it blows my mind people do that crap. I hate that she's still slipping every now and then but I am glad she can at least be honest about it (honestly I'm not sure lying is even in her wheelhouse) so we can do everything we can to give her the tools to get better. This one though, unfortunately I seriously doubt she'll ever be capable of independent living which is sad and she'll always need someone looking out for her. Even when she's not using her mental illness is pretty severe, and she really is only a danger to herself because she's delusional and people prey on that.
